Default Cayman 2011 PDK @ 95k miles - OR - Cayman 2007 @ 64k miles, - My First Porsche!

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and love reading this all!

Now I am planning to buy my first Porsche, I am fan of Cayman's. I am living in Turkey and my options are limited, now I am planning to buy one of those. Details are links are below,

First one is Cayman 2011 PDK@95k miles, 245HP, 2687 CC, no major accidents, I see no major problems at service records. Price is around $43k, which is cheap for Turkey, because of high mileage. Photos can be seen below:

Second one is Cayman 2007@64k miles, 245HP, 2687 CC, no major accidents, had some gearbox issues, fixed all runs smooth. Price is $36k. Seems normal. Even I can say a bit cheap. Photos can be seen below:

Do you guys any ideas for both?
So this is it for now, your helps are very appreciated.

Best,
Erin

I am no expert. However, the 2007 - 2009 have a known engine related issue, something about a bearing (I think). If you have good maintenance records for the 2011 may be the better choice based on my very limited knowledge.

I assume the $43K is Lira which is $9400 USD?

The 11 looks clean. I would buy the 11. Like seemyad said they do have some engine issues with the Gen 1. Do you have a local service place that can service this? Maybe check into that before you buy as well.

What ever you choose, drive it and enjoy it! I am also on the hunt for me first Porsche.

The 11' PDK w/ Sport Chrono will be a lot of fun to snap off shifts. Personally, I think tiptronic on the '07 will leave something to be desired comparatively especially if it has had some problems. Also, the Gen 1 987 (2006 - 2008) does not have IMS bearing issues however can suffer of oil starvation under prolonged periods of high g-foces during corners or braking at the track. It was reported with some owners that tracked it frequently but not all and seemed to be extremely capable regardless. With that said, I've owned both and would go with the 987.2 PDK in a heart beat even with slightly higher mileage and price.

+1. Neither are low mileage garage queens that will hold any type of future value so the DFI engine with PDK trumps that '07 auto-slush-box. Also, while minor -- the updated steering wheel is nice!

I personally thank everyone for replying.

I am unable to reach to service records of 2011. All maintenances is done at second party services. Not in Porsche dealers/distributors. That's why I am going to rule this out but I am still not sure. It is in good shape, now it is 98k miles.

I had $2k discount on 07, it has nice color combination, grey/beige. Love it! Had new service maintenance around $5k, base protectors, shock absorber, brake fluids, filters, ignition coil, tyres (Pirelli) and many more stuff has been done. I believe it had a crush, that's why all the protectors and absorber changed with the new ones.

I think I need to choose one of them, I want Porsche badly

Any more ideas or comments?

I have a 08 Cayman S with a six speed so I am not the definitive expert. However, a friend with the 987.2 with the PDK had the transmission serviced per the Porsche schedule for a whopping $2K!

You posted that you don't have the service records, so this could be a big hit to the wallet.

If you can still pull the records from the second party providers, it might be worth continuing to follow up on the 2011. It still sounds like it could be a good buy, but I would just make sure to do the extra diligence of a PPI - pre purchase inspection. You can cross-reference any results that come from that with any of the service records you can get your hands on. In some cases, a CARFAX report is great for this, as you can sometimes be able to get contact information for the various independent shops that worked on the car, and obtain records that way.

I'd say go for the 987.2 pdk. I did the same just a few weeks ago. 90k mile cayman s pdk. Was a great deal with full service records. I'm not concerned with the mileage as the car is my daily driver

this sounds like BS. Recently had pdk service done on my 997GTS.. fluid flushed and new pan+filter for $1200. That's a far cry from 2k.

The owner of 987.2 has increased the price around $5k. Actually the first owner (car dealer) sold the car to another car dealer and he increased the price.

On the other hand, owner of 2007 has decreased the price around $1.5k.

So I am going to see again the 2007 due to it's price. And we will run a PPI. If it is okay, I will give her a go.

What should we check first? Any ideas? (RPM problem, IMS issue, oil leaks etc.)

Any reputable shop will know what to look for in a PPI.

Lot of misinformation in this thread. The ‘11 is a 987.2 (‘09-‘12) so it has a 2.9L engine with 265 hp not a 2.7L engine with 245hp that the ‘06-‘08 987.1 had.
987.1 DOES suffer from potential IMS issues, unlikely as they may be, as they still have an IMS bearing. The 987.2 design did away with the bearing altogether. The 987.1 also has an inferior oiling system and also has bore scoring issues. Add the fact that 987.2 has a dual clutch pdk compared to the slush box in the 987.1 and it’s really a no brainer. Go for the ‘11.

Unfortunately after the $4k price raise, it is out of my budget... So I think I will go to 987.1.

Just because the asking price was raised doesnt mean they will sell it for that. look at it, and make a fair offer if its what you want.
