BIG987.2 newbie with broken shifter cables - shout out to RennPart + pics
Hey everyone! First time post here! (Sorry its kind of long)
Just got my first Porsche, its a beautiful 987.2 base with the 6 speed with 40k miles
Figured it would be a nice reliable daily, so far I love it but as i was shifting it through an intersection earlier this week, i felt a dreaded POP, and suddenly the shifter went limp
She was stuck in 4th, so I limped it home and did some research - didn't take long to figure out the clutch cable broke, leaving me stranded in BFE aka southwest VA - no porsche dealerships as far as the eye can see
Any close by dealerships (which weren't close) were going to take a weeks to get it in so I figured I could tackle this one myself... maybe...
I called around and stumbled upon RennPart.com who had a new set of cables. I was able to talk to the owner of the company, Aaron, when I called which was cool - super knowledgable dude who recently started his business and races Spec Boxsters, I wanted to see how quick he could get the cables to me hoping to fix it this weekend. After explaining my situation he walked me through the steps on how to do it, but I was a little hesitant and had limited tools. He told me he had a shop located in the northern part of Greensboro, NC and said he could do it in 3 hours. He was the closest and quickest option for me without me further breaking my car as I attempt to fix it... being in a pinch I said why not.
It was about a 2hr drive through some backroads so I limped it there in 4th gear Thursday night and got there at 6:30. I got a good price on the cables, and an even better price on labor compared to a Porsche dealership.
I got to watch as he did the work and about 1.5hrs in, the new cables were installed, the rest of the time he carefully put the car/interior back together and I was on my way home at 9:30
! Talk about service.
If you need any parts regardless of where you're located, I definitely recommend giving RennPart a call (www.rennpart.com) its nice to call someone who knows Porsches instead of some front desk receptionist at a dealership - He is a Porsche specialist and a person who is willing to go out of his way.

First of all, nice car! You got the same colour combo as mine, which is a 987.2 base as well. These cars are very reliable normally. I haven't had any issues with mine in a year and a half of ownership, but still spent a lot on upgrades
I've purchased parts from Aaron as well and can confirm that he goes out of his way to please his customers. Prices on Rennpart.com are very fair and you can always count on him for advise.

Sorry for your inconvenience and surprised it happened to a .2 w only 40k on the clock. Maybe it has more to do with how many times the car was shifted (into any gear) than mileage though I have been told from my Indy that he has done a few Caymans w over 50k miles. My car has 52k+ so later in the spring when I am having the LSD installed (& a new clutch), I’m having the cables replaced. Easier to do it then than later! Also doing the oem short shifter kit. My wife says I’m rebuilding this Track car one part at a time 😂! Thanks for sharing your post and the good words for a fellow Porsche Indy mechanic.

I love the color combo! What upgrades have you done?

I just think the cable connection is a weak from the design but if it happens again ill get the upgraded one thats a little more durable. Good luck with your car!!

Here is what I've done:
Exhaust: Soul long tube sport headers, Carnewal modded Cayman R mufflers and a dual exhaust tip.
Stage 2 ECU tune (supplied by Soul as well)
Suspension: PSS9 coilovers, adjustable LCAs, toe and drop links. -2.5 camber all around
Cayman R spoiler
Paddle PDK steering wheel.
