Future Cayman owner
Currently own a 2005 996 C4S. Yeah I know...don't flame me to badly!
Considering a Cayman in the future and have some questions:
#1: What years, if any, did Caymans have the dreaded IMS?
#2: Does the Cayman suffer D-chunk, cylinder scoring, AOS issues, water pump issues...etc...?
#3: Other issues a prospective buyer should be aware of?
Not sure if I love the idea of a four cylinder turbo 718 but would be interested in comments. I have done some reading on this forum already so understand opinions vary.
BTW leaning to the S version...

1) Up to and including 2008,
2) I had a 981 model and never heard of these problems. Maybe earlier models?
3) The 981 models have been very reliable with no known issues that I'm aware of.
The 981 vs 918 debate is ongoing and which side you're on depends on your viewpoint. There are plenty of threads on this subject. The best thing I can suggest is that you test drive each to see which makes you smile the most.

What's to flame about a C4S 996? Great car.
1) There are two "levels" of IMS issue as you probably know. 996s and Boxters through early 05 had the small single row "replaceable" IMS bearing with a failure rate somewhere in the 8-10% range depending on your source. The later 997s (late 05 and up) and all Caymans had the large IMS bearing that appears to have a failure rate of 1% or less, with lower frequency for cars with good service and frequent oil changes. I recently bought an 06 S with 42000 miles that has had 5,000 mile oil changes and timely services. I'm comfortable with the risk after talking to a couple of local specialists.
2) Cylinder scoring seems to be rare and generally in colder climates. AOS and water pump issues are the same as the 997.1 and 997.2, i.e they may last 40000 miles or 90000. Unless I have a problem, I may replace both at about 60k.
3) No Cayman-specific issues other than drooping headliners in older cars, not common, and the challenge of putting aux/Bluetooth in Bose equipped cars.
Overall the 987.2 (2009 - ) is arguably a better car due to the non-IMS engine, and availability of PDK if you are so inclined. My budget might have bought me a base 987.2 vs. the 987.1 S, but I'm very happy with my choice.
I have not driven a 718 so can't judge, but they sound a bit lame, and I have two friends who bought newer 6 cylinders to avoid the 718. Probably a good car, but......
