Default Should I consider this 2006 Cayman S, even with the noise it's making? (video)

Ran across this car locally, dealer has it priced ~$10k below normal value. The noise sounds godawful to my ears, but I'm not sure what it is specifically. It seems to match the description of 'varies with throttle opening' and I don't gear it at all when the engine is spooling down with the throttle closed, which makes me think maybe it's not that bad?

(Skip to about 1 minute 30 for the actual sound)

Take a listen and let me know what you think. I'm just wondering if it's worth paying to have it taken somewhere and inspected, or if the consensus is going to be the engine is about to grenade and I should walk away.

The price is almost too good to be true, but maybe other people aren't as willing to immediately take their 'new' car into the shop to have work done? It's still a good deal if I end up paying $5k to replace half the engine on day 1 of ownership.

You can't replace "half" an engine for $5K.

I'm with blackboy: "no way".

Walk away. First rule of used car shopping is there is always another car.

Yeah, I'd probably walk away, but if you insist on pursuing it take to a Porsche dealer for a PPI and an estimate on what it will cost to fix. Engines are very expensive, so it might not turn out to be a good deal. That is not a noise you can live with - something is quite wrong.

That video looks like it was recorded in the dead of winter, which means the car has been sitting on the lot for 4-6 months. Looks like a used car lot full of used up "luxury" cars. Then you have the idiot narrator/salesman saying things like "...the red calipers complement the exterior" and "...the steering wheel has no buttons. It's just for steering."

Run, don't walk, away.

That car sounds quite sick (in a bad way). Run the other way and be patient; the right car will come along.

That said, you could always do a PPI to isolate the problem and get an estimate for the repair before making a final decision.

Yeah, that video was pretty weird/annoying until it occurred to me that the intended audience is probably someone who knows nothing about Caymans, wants a "Porsch", and maybe is hard of hearing.

Rod knock, eeek. Was that 145K on the odometer? The car as it stands is worth about 9-10K at most.

I was looking at this car too. Never saw the video until now. The ad has been updated to say the engine needs new sleeves. So basically entire engine replacement which is 10-15k for a used one. It's a 9-10k car Canadian, which is half of what they are asking.

"Should I consider this 2006 Cayman S"
NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
So many cars out there to pick from where you will be taking a ''normal used car risk'' and not the ''i know there is something wrong already, but don't know if it's merely inconvenient or nearly catastrophic" risk.

Best of luck.

Default Nice

N,

You are my hero. Kudos for attacking only get on it head on and not stopping till you got to the bottom of it. I wish you were close I could've sat in the car with you and saved you some trouble but when you mention kids I feel you. Sometimes it's nice to go work on the car! And now you know for sure. Enjoy the car safely and I'm here if you need anything at all.
