Steering wheel shake...
Trying to figure out why my 12 Cayenne S steering wheel shakes. All four tires are basically new, road forced balanced checked. Alignment is dead on.
Next step is tie rods?
Only happens from 67-80mph or so.
Car is CPO

Some Touareg's had the dreaded, dreaded but somewhat rare, SWS=Steering Wheel Shake.
The first thing to check are the air pressures.
Next, lug nuts torqued to spec. The spec for Touareg's was 133 ft lbs. When I got my 2012, it had the shake above 65 mph. I had adjusted the tire pressures so the fronts were even and the rears were even. Torqued lug nuts/bolts and the SWS was gone.
VW had even come out with an indexing of the wheel/rim to eliminate the shake but I don't remember what it was. Even when I had two new sets of tires put on, the shake never came back for me although I would re-torque the lug bolts to make sure they were at 133 ft lbs.

Does it only happen for the first 10 minutes or so of driving time? If so, it's just flat-spots on the tires that smooth out as you drive a bit. Tie rods, ball joints, control arm bushings.
Also, could be an out-of-round tire... not sure if road force balancing finds out-of-round problems or not. Tires can be manufactured out-of-round (rare because there are so many checks during manufacturing) or they can WEAR to an out-of-round condition within as little as 5000 miles. The wear can come from some internal flaw in the tire that was missed or because of some issue with the suspension or even tire pressures - and sometimes from rotating tires (BMW, for example, warns not to rotate tires on many models because of the out-of-round wear issue).

Yea I wasn't buying a Cayenne that wasn't CPO. Happy I did. Replaced rear sunshade motor, heater blower motor already. Car should be problem free for the next 100,000!

Our Diesel had a slight, but noticeable vibration in the steering wheel at high speeds. Tires are the original Goodyear Eagles. Took two trips back to the dealer to balance the tires. Seems to be pretty smooth right now. Give rebalancing a chance and see what happens.

9/10 times it's wheel balance or a wheel with excessive runout. . Have the wheels run on the balance machine with the current balancing weights in place. See if the result is a perfect balance report. Most shops strip the weights and then rebalance so you never know if the original balancing was good or bad.

Almost every time someone has had slight vibration at speed it has been tire balance, bad wheel, or bad tires. Rarely has it turned out to be anything deeper. For my first CTT it was cheap wheels that went out of round. The second was cheap chinese tires which were new that came on a set of sport technos I bought used. Couldn't balance the things.
