Default Request to the Moderators

Folks, I'm making this a public posting (and I'll report it so we know the moderators will see it..)

I would like to suggest that this forum be split. It currently covers ALL Cayennes. That was fine when there was basically one series - the 955/957 series. All the questions pertained to mostly the same vehicle. With the introduction of the 958 - the arrangement was not so great, but since for at least 4 years - all the 958's in the US were under warranty, and not much DIY went on - it still wasn't a major problem.

Now it is a problem. And it's loosing members to other forums.

955/957 posts still constitute a majority of the threads on this forum. They also have the ONLY stickies at the top of the forum. Note there are NO 958 stickies.

As the 958's have moved out of warranty, and some issues have become apparent - threads do appear here that are very much 958 specific. And the threads would be useful to prospective used Cayenne buyers - but they simply disappear down the page as they are drowned by 955/957 posts.

What's needed - especially with a new Cayenne due next year - is to split the forum into at least two subforums, and plan to add another when the new Cayenne appears.

The model for this would be:

PRIMARY FORUM: Cayenne
  • SUBFORUM: 955/957
  • SUBFORUM: 958
  • SUBFORUM: Future (can be renamed once the new model is announced.)
Other forums have also added subforums for turbos, tech-writeups/diy, etc. I don't know if this is needed or desirable. It requires more work for the moderators to keep the stuff sorted out.

Advantages of this - we'd no longer have IMPORTANT threads such as ones concerning the VarioCam Adjuster failures on early 958 V8's, or the Transfer-Case failure threads disappear. They could be stickied in the 958 subforum and easily found by users AND search engines.

I'd like to hear from others as to what they think of the idea. I am reporting this to the moderators - who can watch it, act on it, ignore it, or delete it - whatever their desires are is fine with me. I have no skin in the game so to speak - but this forum could be made more valuable to the users if some minor tweaking was done.

I think this is a good idea.

The 955/957 series and 958 series (both .1 &.2) are different enough that they are "different cars."

I have a 955, and while I will skim through some of the 958 stuff just out of boredom & curiosity, those threads really don't apply to me.

I don't know how it would break down, or if the 958 and whatever is coming next should be combined (like the 955 & 957 should be), and I also don't know how much work/trouble it would be to do this.

And while we are at it, how about a real "so you want to buy a Cayenne" sticky?
If you take a look in the 928 forum, there is a "New Visitor, read this first" sticky that covers a lot of issues, about the car, about parts & vendors and about posting here in general. It's very nice.
Unlike this forum, any "hey, I want a 928" threads are quickly directed there.

Agree on both of these, and that the subforums would be a good idea. Seeing that the Cayenne is one of Porsche's top sellers by volume, having sub forums would make searching for info WAY easier and even casual reading much more pertinent.

However I think breaking it into subclasses like "turbo" etc is a waste of time and will splinter the participation such that the forum will not be a destination anymore. There is enough in common between Cayennes that I don't think that a Turbo subforum would be useful.

I would imagine once someone writes up a full buyers guide, the mods will sticky it and I agree while the 04 yuk/05 luck/06 better is funny AND true, it's not really helpful to most newcomers

100% agree with this suggestion, and I really appreciate deilenberger's request to the Moderators to do this. This kind of subforum approach is what 6SpeedOnline uses and it's a much more efficient way to address the different issues facing the different series of our PiGs. For my money, the split should retain all variants of the series in the same forum and not split out Turbos/GTS's like the other guys have done ...

Best point of the year.

We do need our own subform. I tend to visit the 6 speed forum for this exact reason. It's 958 specific

I agree with this wholeheartedly.

Separate the Cayenne Generations.

My only suggestion would be to put model years with the new groups.

Completely agree this needs to happen. No need to splinter things with the turbo vs NA since MOST of the information or questions will pertain to both.

Very happy you brought this up.

Great idea since many owners have no idea of the model designations..

Great idea - the cars (trucks) are vastly different.

If Rennlist can support 996, 997 and 991 separate boards - why not?

I think having series specific subs is a good idea. I do not like how 6spd split turbos and non-turbos though. At least in the 958 forum the split hurt the forum as there were some really good users that had TTs and stopped posting with the non-TTs even though the cars are otherwise identical.
