2015 turbo excess oil consumption?
My dad took delivery of a facelifted cayenne turbo (520ps) two months back. I got to drive it the other day for the first time. He had put 7000 kms on the odo and I felt free to step on it properly. I drove it for 8 hours in total, 4 hours at speeds of 200 km/h and above on the autobahn. I had a brief play with a facelifted S8 during which I hit an indicated 300 km/h (max speed is listed at 278, Porsche being truly conservative). The Audi was nowhere to be seen. Towards the end of my drive I got a warning message on the dash "please refill max 2 litres engine oil, drive on possible". Called local Porsche service, the guy was helpful but said he had never seen 2l top up message, he said he had only ever seen a 1 litre message. I stopped at the closest petrol station and topped up with 1l of Castrol Edge 0w40 (they didn't have Mobil1). Now on the car menu oil is at the half way mark which probably means I needs a good deal more to get to the max point.
My question is whether this sort of oil consumption is normal for the turbo. I have had cars that have used up to 1l per 10 000 kms but this is well in excess of 1l and the car has covered only 7000 kms. I know the engine is new and maybe that is also a contributing factor to a higher oil consumption but it still feels wrong. The car is equipped with the sports exhaust system which makes it easy to see that a lot of black (burnt oil) is coming through the exhaust. Porsche were notified and claim that this is normal. Please advise...

My 2015 is a Cayenne S V6 twin turbo. Which is similar to V8 with 2 cylinders removed has used no oil.
Did first oil change at 5000 Miles. However my exhaust also looks all sooty and black no liquid oil. Same as my 997 which also uses no oil between changes either.

I agree with all the above. My 2008 CTT eats oil for lunch. I add about .5l each 700 miles, which is well within Porsche allowances. 500Hp has its costs!
BTW, does anyone have a good method for removing the soot from the exhaust tips? I am using a lot of elbow grease right now...
Cheers,
TomF

The largest contributor of oil consumption in the Cayenne is the pcv system that is geared towards emissions reductions. Like many factory turbo vehicles, the Cayenne needs a properly plumbed Air Oil Seperator.

Another thing to consider, is that if the Cayenne was "babied" for several thousand KM, you consumed oil, but was masked by additional moisture build up (normal). Then you took it for a good spin, got the oil hot enough to burn off all the moisture in the oil, and BAM, the oil level drops another 1/2 litre.

I have had quite a few 500+ ps cars and none has consumed any oil. To my mind anything that comes close to 1l per 1000 kms is borderline ridiculous. I cant believe that Porsche designed it that way. My 2015 RS6's manual states that it can consume up to .8l per 1000 kms but 10 000 kms down the line and it has not touched it at all. It gets driven harder than the Cayenne too.

The oil consumption seems to vary wildly between engines so the OP where 2 l over 7.000 kms is well within spec.
Not just 520 ps engines too. In fact, I doubt that number has anything to do with it. The 33 ps or so KLR single cylinder motorcycle engine is spec'd to burn up to 1 l / 1.000 kms!

Interestingly, when we took delivery, our dealer suggested two things - 1) a very aggressive break-in approach, per Porsche (i.e. no babying it) and 2) they included a bag and quart of Mobil 1 that mounts in the boot. (this might be standard, but this is our first new Porsche in 10 years, I found it surprising)
FWIW, given its primarily my wife's family truckster (she has a lead foot), they even gave her a tutorial on how to fill and measure the oil...as they fully expect it to need filling.
Re the exhaust soot, that seems to be common on all of our cars (including the Fiat)....carbon and moisture/condensation. A wipe/quick detail on the paint and a bit of metal cleaner on the exhaust works for us.

^^^Wow! That reminds me of my father-in-law telling me about the Dodge Charger he had in the 70s. He said he'd stop at the gas station and say "Fill up the oil and check the gas."

Drove from Illinois to New Jersey last weekend and I got the message "Max 2.0 Quarts Oil Refill" warning message popped up around 3350 miles on the car. It's about 800 miles.
Granted my speed was between 90-105 most of the time on Sport mode. Still I don't know if it's normal or not. Will check my dealership once I go back to Illinois next weekend. I guess I have to keep 1-2 Qtr. oil handy just in-case.
