Towing an enclosed trailer question
I'm looking at enclosed trailers to tow my 993 to the track but I'm concerned about total weight. The car, trailer and gear will be 7000-7500 pounds, pretty close to the 7700 pound capacity of the Cayenne. I could get an all aluminum enclosed trailer but the cost is quite a bit more. I want the enclosed trailer so I can carry additional crap I probably won't need. Also, the enclosed trailer is good to store the car in for the winter.
Have any of you towed roughly that weight with a Cayenne? Is an 08 Gts with the trailering package.
Thanks
Jim

So long as the weight distribution is ok you will hardly notice it
You need an electric brake system, always stay out of 6, manually change if you can. Your not in a big chevy pick up but you have more than enough power.

It will do it but be careful as you have set up a situation where the towed vehicle is considerably heavier than the mule. Secondly even with trailer brakes you are putting the normal Cayenne brakes to the test. I tow quite a bit with my Cayenne ( first and "S" and now a Diesel and I chose to go with the trailex enclosed. Yes more expensive but I feel better knowing my trailered weight is still well below the maximum published capability of the Cayennes. A good rule of thumb its limit your towed overall weight not to exceed 90% of you max allowable tow rating. I use 6000 lbs as the max guideline wit the Cayenne and have never had an issue.
Another item is that the "experts" recommend that the tongue weight of your trailer loaded be 10-12 percent of the total trailer weight YET Porsche set a mx tongue weight of 650 lbs. 90 % of 7700 is more tongue weight than Porsche certifies the Cayenne for. Yet another reason not to tow 7000 plus.If you have to tow that much consider a bigger tow vehicle or a lighter trailer My .02 cents worth

Tongue weight is important for longitudinal stability in cross winds where you want to have enough relative weight on the rear axle. Also, keep in mind the wear and tear on your tow vehicle's transmission, engine, etc... as you are pushing the towing weight to max capacity.

Thanks for correcting my error on the tongue weight. My typing got ahead of my brain. I had a long discussion with some Porsche engineers on their max towing weight and the max recommended tongue weight and they just refused to objectively address the inconsistency.
As a measure towing weight depending on which car is in my Trailex (the 997.2 GT3 being the heaviest at 3100) plus the weight of the trailer at 2000 and about 400-500 lbs of "stuff" I can still not exceed the recommended tongue weight and have a very manageable total weight.
Also to keep over all weight down, since we all add "stuff" to our enclosed trailers I have used the PitPal alum racks which are nice and allow things to be safely stored.
Another feature of the trailer is that it is easily adjustable with sliding chocks inside so the car can easily be adjusted fore and aft to balance the load. Another critical element is safe towing.

I tow a 24' Carson Racer enclosed trailer close the the max weight with my 2013 diesel and it performs perfectly.
I do have a trailer brake controller installed by the dealer and a load balancing hitch.
