Default CTT Oil Consumption

I had read that the CTT was bad for oil consumption.

It took me a few K miles after I bought my 2008 CTT @ 18K miles with an unknown oil, but being supplemented by Mobil 1 20W50. I was consuming
about 1 qt every 1K miles. Which is pretty much par for the course
as far as I was reading.

I finally got the chance to change the oil to Amsoil 20W50. I have had good
luck with Amsoil in my race car -- so I figured I would try it in my CTT.

To date -- it has used virtually 0 oil. I have been checking every 1K miles to see if any oil was needed, but its still on the full mark where i had it when I did
the oil change 6K miles ago.

Time for my next (first Amsoil) oil change -- I'll be spending the extra $$ and
filling the CTT back up with Amsoil

YMMV -- or your oil consumption may vary :-),

I have 44k (44,019 to be exact lol) on my 04' CTT, I've only had it for 2k but it doesn't seem to eat much oil at all, maybe a fill line (on the oil bottle each k). My 06' CS ate a bit more about half a quart, but all in all I'm not sure why some eat so much, while other don't. 0w-40 M1 documented in both trucks since new.

My '06 turbo finally has 53k and burned 1/2 a quart in 4000 miles. First oil it has ever eaten. 0W40 Mobile 1 changed every 3000 for the first couple of years and every 4000 since.

I like changing the oil. Best thing you can do for your engine.

Is 20W50 even safe long term?

wooohoo, I just ordered 25 liters of motul 8100 x-clean 5w-40. my sucker burns a liter every 1000kms (or less ). I change my oil every 10 000kms (±6200 miles), but with the amount of oil it's burning, I pretty much run on fresh oil all the time
I found out that I can burn 2 liters in approx. 200kms - all it takes is to drive a steady 220km/h for about 45 minutes - until the gas runs out :-)

1 quart per 1 km is considered acceptable by the factory.

Is 20W-50 on the approved oil list for the P!g?

if it has any kind of porsche approved spec, the temperature ratings are just a user preference.

0w-40 vs. 20w-50 is a viscosity issue not a temp issue. Yes temp plays a roll in the viscosity but temp is not the sole deciding issue.

I seriously doubt I'd run anything higher than a 10w-40 in the P!g.
Personally I run 5w-40 Motul X-cess (not sure of full name) which is a Porsche Approved Oil.

I agree. I don't try to outsmart the tribology gurus who specified the oil for these marvelous engines; especially when I turn the key on a -15F morning after the car's sat for a few February days at Flagstaff airport. It's 0-W-40 for me.

Default excess oil consumption in a turbo

MAY be a sign of a pin-hole leak. You can go a long time with it, but you have to watch your oil like a hawk while you save up about $12 grand. :-( hopefully that's not your problem, but good to know.

Check your charge pipe seals by the intercooler. They are known to leak oil. I would also check the valve cover gaskets. When I was shopping for a Cayenne everyone I looked at exhibited some form of leaks from the valve cover gaskets.

Imo, there are a couple of items that contribute to excess oil consumption in the ctt.

A pcv system with a sorry *** oil air separator.
Sorry *** Journal bearing Turbos
Forged pistons and the particuilar ring package.
Piston clearances, and lateral gas ports in the pistons that are likely clogged with carbon.
Valve guides and seals depending on age and or mileage.

It's probably one of the most beat to death topics and yet very few will even take the time or spend a couple bucks on a catch can which would prob. eliminate 90% of the oil inn the charge plumbing.

One could replace the charge pipe seals at every oil change however they will still seep because oil puddles and sits there.

Burning oil lowers your octane and cloggs things up. It's not your friend.

04 CTT with 222,000 km. Uses 3 litres in 20,000km. I'm more than happy with that. It freaked me out doing 20k oil changes as I come from an era just after the dino's left the earth. But the manual actually says 35,000km... I just can't do that. And it's easy to remember when oil changes are due....

Default Manual

Here is a "snippet" from the official manual on the Cayenne's oil consumption. Luckily for me they don't list the consumption for the Turbo S - probably because they didn't want to be transparent about how much oil I burn in my turbo. I notice throughout a month to month period the more I "push" the turbo the more oil I tend to burn (very minor overall).
