For future reference the shift **** can be removed using the following process:
1) Twist the bottom of the **** to unlock it (some people can do it by hand, but I had to use a rubber strap wrench).
2) Pull the lock button out towards the PCM. Again, by hand is possible, but you may want to use a thin tool to help.
3) Lift the **** off the shifter. No significant force should need to be applied. If you find it is needing force, but back and start over from step 1 to make sure it is fully unlocked and the button is fully out. If you force it, it will break a part inside and you'll need a new ****.
Once it's off the PCM will come out with the car in Park.
To reinstall:
1) Hold the button all the way out.
2) Slide it back on the shifter. Again, no significant force is need. If you need force, remove the **** and make sure the button is all the way out.
3) Release the button and click it into place.
4) Twist the locking mechanism back into the locked position.
If you find that you broke the ****, don't panic. The car is still perfectly drivable. Simply slide the **** off, pull the plastic tab up, and use the aluminum tube to shift. You only need to do that to go to/from Park. Once out of park you can slide the **** back on and shift normally with it. When your wife gets mad at you for breaking your brand new expensive car, tell her it is a theft deterrent
