I'm looking at using my 19" wheels strictly as a winter set up while going to a 20" for The summer on our '09 Turbo.

Winters are mild here, but the car will be driven for the Holidays across the South to the Midwest where it is not uncommon to get a dose of wet snow.

Really like the aggressive look of the 265/50 on the 19" wheel with a 295/35 for the 20" summer setup.

Wow, some nice shots on this thread! Has anyone tried 285/50R20’s on a 955 CTT? I have seen it done on a Touareg, but it seems it would be pretty close on a CTT. Reason I want to try this is I have my stock turbo 20” rims for winter tires, and I would like to stick with them rather than trade them for 18”. In the summer I run 285/35R22 with 12mm spacers, which clear the ball joints fine but it doesn’t look like there is much room for turning. They are 29.9” by 11.2”, and the 285/50R20’s are 31.2” by 11.2”. I want to put Terra Grappler G2’s on for off road and winter use.

Not sure how close Touaregs are to the Cayenne, when you get down to fractions of an inch. So if anyone has put 285/50R20” on a CTT, which needs spacers to clear the brakes anyways, I’d appreciate hearing about how it went. Thanks.

Terra Grappler G2's are horrible in the winter according to a friend of mine that has run them.

Thanks prosled - I did actually find some reviews that said the same and it concerned me. These will be used off road but also in deep Canadian snow. So maybe not the Nitto’s. But I still have to decide on the size. I am heading out camping and need more sidewall than 35’s! Would rather not buy a set of 18” so trying to find the best option to keep my original 20”, and you can get most of the good M&S tires in 285/50R20, but still haven’t found anyone who has tried those on a Cayenne, only on a Touareg.

If I had to stay with 20's I would probably run a 265/50-20 in either the GY Wrangler Adventure I have or the Conti AT in the same size. Both should work well in snow and off road. Dedicated snows do not work off road, the rubber compound is too soft and they are easily damaged, ask me how I know... I would go with the narrower tire for clearance and better snow performance, the 285 will suffer in deep snow.

I'd suggest trying what I did and keep your eye on eBay for stock 18 inch wheels. You'll see a lot of people asking $800 and up however the set I bought and are shown in the pictures were listed at $500, I offered $400 and they were on their way free shipping. They may not be immaculate but pretty darn clean and good enough for me.

OK, thanks for the tips guys. It is true the 285’s would be too wide for snow I guess. I also posted a question on 6speed to see if anyone has run 275/55R20’s, but it seems no one does that either. Edit - I just found someone who tried 275/55R20’s and they say they rubbed. So for 20”, I guess you’re right prosled, 265/50R20 would be it for 20’s.

But it also looks like 18” really are the way to go. $400 is a great price, but I don’t have the room to store two extra sets of wheels, so I would have to trade someone my 20” for a set of 18”s. There are a couple of people interested in that here in town. Then I could maybe try the Kumho Road Venture AT51’s and see if I like the whole setup.

I’ve been searching for off-road/winter road trip tire options and came across the 265/50-20 Nitto Terra Grappler that looks pretty aggressive.

Still very soft tires and less of tire wall for impacts if you are looking to get off road versus aggressive appearance tire appeal.

I agree on the sideway but I haven't been able to find 19" tires and 18" won't clear the brakes.

I am thinking about installing Pirelli Scorpion ATRs 255/60/18 to use as an off-road / winter setup, which will more than likely see mostly highway use. Price on tirerack seems good. Anyone run these?

If your Cayenne is 2010 or older you should be able to get away with any tire that does not exceed 31.5 inches diameter and 10.5 inches in width. Those are the dimensions of the oversize 265/65R18 that several people are running with no issue. I don't know enough to speak about the 2011 and newer.

For the 4th time, I got a flat tire in my 955 Turbo S. No thanks to Porsche for putting a subwoofer instead of a spare tire. Cut the sidewall on a rock, again... The sealing kit can't repair that. My options are:

1. don't go off road ever again
2. get a roof mounted spare
3. swap out tires for beefier/uglier off road tires

Thoughts?

Thank the person that optioned your Cayenne new. Porsche offered several options to have a spare tire.

those tires have no business going off road like that and you had to know better. That being said, there are trailer hitch mounting systems for spares. get some 18's and put some beefy off roads on them and carry a 5th.
