mpm, I haven't bought a new car since the mid-70's! After spending a few years in the car biz, I became convinced of that pov (for me). Now, I could acquire any new vehicle under about $100K, but I choose to await my "treasury ship" pulling into port before I re-evaluate my stance. I have owned 4 Porsches, starting in '83, currently have 3 (2 911s & a 356A).

When I select my next 4 door, 5 passenger vehicle, I will consider a (used) Cayenne. I will evaluate it thusly; a) does it meet my requirements (functional & financial)? b) does it fulfill the designer's intent? c) do I like it, subjectively / aesthetically (this is the level at which "Porscheness" becomes meaningful, if at all)?.

Having been in the business, and understanding the allocation process, there is always trepidation about new models, esp. when a completely new line is introduced in uncertain economic times. I look forward to testing the Cayenne when it hits the showrooms. If it is a hit, then it might be quite awhile before I consider one. If it a (sales) failure, then I can consider it sooner, but it must still meet the criteria I outlined. A "no lose" situation for me.

As I commented elsewhere, there is (IMO) a hierarchy for influencing the PAG & PCNA of today, going something like this; a) owner/shareholder (ie influence @ the board level), b) work there in a key position, c) dealer franchise holder, d) product owners & prospects, e) the media.

Hey, these discussions are fun & venting in advance of release is harmless (after all, the Cayenne is a long-foregone conclusion, we debate everything else), maybe even therapeutic! But not so much as a nice drive in the country, or at a DE, or performing a little constructive O&M...
Cheers!

BigPguy - now that it loks like Porsche has sold out 3 years of production by forcing the allocations on the dealer network - sales targets don't work. How about if it can be bought for less then MSRP within 6 months, or % drop in market value after one year (I'll guesss > 20%).

And yes, I'll go all out and buy you 2 beers... <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Kevin - good points, I agree there is a much greater $ value in used car market - and the hunt for the right car is a fun hobby. That's why I'll probably move next to a 993TT - and probably stop there - FWIW. Considering how fugly this thing is - you'll be able to get one cheap in 2 or 3 years

And for me, on topic ranting is definitely therapeutic, probably cuts some the wrong way - but they probably don't have much of a life anyway.

Have a super weekend - we have our kart league and a 1 1/2 hour enduro this weekend - WHAAHOOO

MPM: No need to try to move the goalposts, the bet can stay in it's present form. I have no reason to believe the cars were 'forced' on their dealer network, and you haven't given us any reason to think so either. I think that's an urban myth, or at least a lot of 'hoo ha'. More likely, Porsche said "If you want to sell our stuff, here it is" and then the dealers 'choose' to sell under that kind of franchise arrangement. But if you can find some Porsche literature saying they have been forced into a situation they cannot sell to customers, or a Porsche dealership that is saying it has been 'forced' or placed in 'duress' publicly so we can all verify it, I'll buy your plan for a decent bet. But for now, the 'meeting sales targets' seems an appropriate milestone. Seems to me that the dealers are in free countries, and can freely choose to sell Porsche or not to sell Porsche, unless of course they live in Afghanistan or China or someplace where there is little freedom. Naturally, though, this is practically impossible, cause folks places like that don't likely have much need for too many accessories, 'cept maybe a turret mount, bullet proof glass or flame retardant upholstery. So given that dealers can choose to sell Porsche or not to sell Porsche, seems they've 'chosen' to sell Porsche and have already sold out the Cayenne.

I prefer a light beer, or a wheat beer, very cold, German, and from a bottle if possible...but in the evenings I prefer Glenlivet or Laphroag, and I don't drink with minors so it's gotta be at least 18.

That came from Clair Porsche + Audi in Boston, the sales manager was bitch'en. Yeah, it's probably an urban legend, but you're on - if Porsche reaches their sales target the drinks are on me...
