Don't sound the death knell for the SUV just yet
I just got back from the Chicago Auto Show.
There seemed to be huge interest in SUVs.
Jeep had lots of floor space and it was packed.
They had a very cool concept called the Compass which was based on the Liberty platform.
Ford and Toyotas had theirs up front, in prime space.
BMW and MB had people crawling all over their category offerings. Those two brands always get big traffic at this show, but the trucks seemed as popular as the cars.
All of which is nothing to sneeze at, if the future of the company really does depend on the Cayenne.

True there are lotsa behemoths arriving soon. Every one of them was conceived and created during recent times of economic prosperity- before the unpleasantness. There is a growing sentiment that vehicles which waste fuel are unpatriotic. We'll see how this mood affects SUV sales.

They also make great "technicals" (add a TOW, a BOFORS, Recoiless, etc. and everyone can defend the Nation). However, perhaps we should ban racing because of its willful waste of fuel for entertainment purposes. Bad image & all that...

I dunno, nothing seems more wasteful than a Cadillac Escalade and those things are selling like crazy out here.
