How often do you change your oil?
Im generally pretty **** about changing my oil every 3500 even though everyone I talk to says its a waste of time and money. I change it at around 3500 miles, and start to twitch and cant sleep nights when it goes over that. However the older I get the less inclined i get to climb under a car in the winter. I just changed the oil maybe 1000 miles ago which should put me smack in the middle of Feb when I hit 3500 miles on it. Not exactly when I want to be under the thing.
Its an 06 S, currently about 105,000 miles on it and I use Mobil 1 synthetic. Some have said do it at 5000, some say 10,000. What do you guys think?

Cayenne is 7,500 - 10k mi.
M3 is 5k - 7.5k mi
993 is 1 yr (6k mi this yr.) (this is an air/oil cooled car though)
IMHO 3 - 5k is way overkill, but if it helps you sleep at night......

My wife does 99% of the driving on it, so its all hiway, its properly warmed up before she leaves the driveway and it probably has never seen anything north of 3800 rpm. Im guessing with that light duty, a longer interval should be OK. Thanks Bill, I appreciate it.

My grandfather taught me this and his cars ran strong forever: there is no such thing as changing the oil too often. It's not simply a lubricant ...it's also a anti-gumming chemical cleanser for all those tight little spaces, fluid ports, and squirting jets inside the motor.
As to price and time? I tell everyone that fresh engine oil and a new filter is hilariously inexpensive and infrequent when compared to engine repair, engine replacement or just a reduction in power. $70 to $80 bucks? That's a single fill up of premium gasoline.
I'm 100% with you. I change at 4000 miles ...and I enjoy doing it.

On our BMW 740i I went with the interval indicator on the service light, which was about 10,000 km between changes (mostly highway.) We had over 160,000 km of trouble free service from this car before we sold it for a good price. Engine ran strong, no leaks, no knocks, no problems!
On our Cayenne V-6 my first service and oil change will be on December 29th at 15,000 km (just over 9,000 miles), all highway. Having a brother who is a chem engineer with a major oil company, we get to hear the educated version of "synthetic oil lasts longer - go with the OEM recommended oil change schedule & viscosity."
But if changing more often will give you better sleep, go for it. It won't hurt your engine, just use your money less effectively. Small environmental impact (unless you pour it somewhere inappropriate. )

I change mine at 4-4.5k and use castrol full syntec 5w-50. I also have NO oil consumption.
My 951 track car 1.5k ( very heavy abuse) castrol full syntec 5w-50.
My 930 ruf and 930 turbo carrera same as the 951(minus the abuse)......all others vehicles 3k.

I go with the service reminder, I think it's 15 000kms (±9300mls) and that's 2 to 3 times a year for my annual mileage which I think is way more than enough. did the same w/ BMW and Benz I had, both were well over 200K mls when sold and did not have any issues at all.
the CT-S burns through A LOT of oil between the changes anyways, so I always have a quart or two of fresh oil in the engine I use mobil 5w-50.

The Porsche spec is 20,000 miles or once a year. I halve that - 10,000 mile changes. Given the quantity (9 quarts) of oil that the Cayenne uses - IMHO there is no chance that the oil additive packages are worn out and used up, or that the viscosity has changed enough to matter - and that's what makes oil good or worn out. Since my oil consistantly runs at 200F - there also should be no sign of ashing (which means overheated oil and oil charring.) BUT - all the above is OPINION and guesswork only - I haven't done what I really need to do:
There is science available that will tell you exactly what you need to know about your oil - no need to ask for "opinions" from forums.. because that's all you're getting.
Next time I do change the oil I'll send a sample to Blackstone Labs and see what they say. Anything less then a lab report is guesswork and old-wive's-tales (or old mechanic's tales). The full oil analysis is $35. Considering the cost of one unnecessary oil change on a V8 Cayenne - it's money well spent.
BTW - I have been using Blackstone for years - for BMW M cars and BMW motorcycles. You can ask them to do the full analysis which includes asking about how much longer the oil could safely be used. That is probably the most useful part of their tests. On the bikes (4 quart capacity) the test really doesn't make economic sense as far as extending the oil use, but it is useful to see if there are any odd wear patterns showing up in metals suspended in the oil. They've even been very cooperative in doing tests of "virgin" samples of oil to see what the base numbers of new oil are, making their extended use reports even more accurate. They also have a large database of oils as used in different vehicles/engines - and provide you with what are "average" numbers for all the oil components and wear trace metals.

6~8K myself between changes. I also use Blackstone labs and they have a database of similar vehicles and they say that mine is below average for all wear compared to other Cayenne's they've tested and say I can probably go 8~9K between changes based on (TBN). I use Redline 10w-40 in the summer and 5w-40 in the winter (Pacific Northwest, so 20~25'F is a cold winter night).

Actually - that depends.
What year do you own? 2005-2007(?) the spec for oil change is:
2005–2007 every 20,000 miles or every 2 years
That's right from their maintenance schedule dated 07/2010.
2009-10 are 10,000 miles/1 year, 2003-2004 are 12,000 miles or every 2 years.
