08 Cayenne Turbo suddenly blowing smoke
#46
Brian,
Mine did not smoke like yours does when revving while parked. It would smoke at start-up but then revving it would not produce any smoke. There is a chance it may not be scored cylinders but it also may mean that your scoring was worse than mine.
Good Luck,
Roy

Upon inspecting intercooler lines, passenger side was bone dry... drivers side has considerable amount of oil. Indy is actively removing exhaust to get a better look to confirm that it is indeed the turbo.
Approx 2800 Labor, 1500 for turbos.. all in we’re figuring 5gs.
Not the worst news I suppose...

My mechanic also thought it was a turbo initially. He found a little oil in the driver side but none on the passenger side. He said that it is normal for oil to pool on the driver side ...... in fact he said that he usually sees more oil on the driver side on other Turbo's and recommends drying them out at every oil change. The turbo angle was the start of my diagnostic $$ pit. He did mention before he started to look at the turbo's that it is rare to have a turbo go bad in these Peppers ........ but I was so hoping it wasn't scored cylinders that I was willing to try anything cheaper.

If Lupo.sk is referring to the oil pan, it is the best advice you are going to get. Drop the oil pan and boroscope the cylinders. If no scoring you can then proceed on to the turbo's and feel confident that your Pepper can be saved without costing a limb or two.

I haven’t heard back from them yet on if they checked the plugs but this shop is the only shop I’d ever use. I’m most confident they’re on top of it and what to look for. Rest assured that I’m still forwarding all the info you guys are giving me to make sure I stay as ahead of the curve as I can on this one. I’m not so keen on dumping this many thousands into a truck I just bought. My solice is coming from knowing that they’re the best group around to have their hands on my baby(ies) and that it’s an absolutely phenomenal car/ truck to own. I’ll be that much happier when this is in the rear view.
Thanks again guys. You guys are great.

Maybe a stupid question, but aren't the two sides isolated? If you have a bad turbo on one side, do you get oil smoke from both sides, or only the side with the bad turbo? Because, in the videos, you've definitely got oil smoke from both sides.

But it's always a good idea to change both turbos. It's an engine - out job so you should do everything possible while you're at it

If the shop REALLY knew the CTT they would know about the oil in the drivers intercooler tube. Very common, just clean it up every other service and don't worry. If they are taking the car apart based on that finding, they are not really on top of the issue, better grab your wallet with both hands because they are learning on your dime.

I wouldn't pull anything more apart until they reinstall the driver's side intercooler after emptying it and you see if the smoke still persists. Oil vapor is routed back into the driver's side intake for emissions purposes and when the vapor condenses it leaves oil in that intercooler, which to someone who doesn't know, looks like blow-by from a blown Turbo, but isn't. If there's enough oil accumulated in there it could smoke like yours.

That actually makes perfect sense, but if I consider the way the smoke appeared, totally sudden and thick.. would it not make sense that something happened to change the circumstances either in the intercooler line or the cylinder to create such smoke in such a sudden manner?
