Default slight front end clunk when applying the brakes

any common reason? Have a slight clunk when applying the brakes, seems to be coming from the front end and can feel it through the steering wheel on this 2006 cayenne S

How many miles? The Lower Control Arms don't last forever.

Put on hoist and look at the rear bushings on the front lower control arms. They are hydraulic and don't last forever. You can buy the bushing for about 60 per side and pay to have them pressed in/out or you can buy rebuilt arms with new bushing all around and new ball joint. Call Roger at 928srus for pricing. You could also try Rock Auto for generic ones also.

Here's mine in the vise. Had a shop press a new bushing in, cut it and ruin new bushing. Got new control arms now and calling it done.

Taking out the control arms is a very easy job. 21mm ratchet wrench, breaker bar with 21mm socket and a lift. No need to futz with springs or anything. You can have out and back in within 30 min once car is on lift. Use a t40 torx socket in bottom of ball joint to hold spindle if it turns on you.

Use new lock nuts. Also use scribe or paint pen to mark alignment locations to get you back to where you need to be.

How many miles? Did it spontaneously start occurring? Or have you recently messed with the front end? I once put too much antiseize on the face of the rotor/wheel hubs and got a clunk under acceleration and braking. Cleaned up the extra grease and the problem went away.

Squirrels. It's always squirrels.

Or, it could be the brake pads, themselves, shifting in the calipers when you apply the brakes.

Does it happen each time you brake?

My money is on control arm bushings. With 123k on the clock, go ahead and do both upper and lower. Also check all your other suspension linkages while you are in there and make sure everything else is tight.
