I'll say that they are not for everyone with the steeper gearing (4.10 vs 3.73) because you are in first (if you even bother with first) very briefly and also turn about 800 rpm higher at highway speeds.
I've had a 2009 GTS manual for three years now and love driving it. There was a bit of a learning curve in getting the shifting down but now it's smooth driving. With the AWD and PDCC it feels like it's glued to the road and stays stable even on hard corners. It's my family car and my sports car all in one...

Do you largely avoid first gear altogether?

Yes unless it's uphill. Just go straight from 2nd.

The 6MT GTS doesn't shift as crisp as a g50 911 or a Boxster, but I find the shifting experience more refined than my older rear engined Porsches. If you want the quickest way to get your family from point A to point B, I agree that a Turbo or TurboS would be the way to go. But if you want to be more engaged during your commute or kiddie carpool, then you can't beat a 6MT GTS,

You know how you have a list of cars you regret selling ....well the 6 speed manual GTS with PDCC is one I wish I had back. Like some folks have said , use 1st gear only when going up an incline on take off and 2nd the rest of the time. I loved everything about the GTS except the location of the shifter. It was located too far to the rear of the car. I have long arms and with seat adjusted all the way back ,the shifter just wasn’t comfortable after a time. Other than that and a some guy from New York made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, I let it go. Damn, that was one I should’ve kept.

I just realized then like the pattern on the 914 kinda, the 2-3 shift won't be a straight throw up lol.
Nice to see a little more manual appreciation showing up too!

I usually shift from 1st to 3rd to 6th.

Will try starting from 2nd to see how the works.
