The PIWIS is more accurate than the instrument cluster. It shows the oil level value in millimeters, and there is a chart that shows how many mm is considered "full" depending on what type of oil level sensor, and what software your vehicle is running.
I wouldn't be too worried about reading it with the instrument cluster. At worst it may be ½ quart off. Great write-up!

Too kind, Amar....
Thanks Andy. I've never been anywhere with salted roads. We have hard water from our well so it could be residue from that but I don't typically hose down the engine or under the car. Probably just dirty splash from puddles; there are openings where water can get in from the sides. Should have cleaned it while I was under there but too lazy.....

Just because I feel like being an *** today you could only manually check it with a dipstick or counting the amount of oil you put back in during the change. Using a PIWIS tester is still doing it electronically. I don't imagine they have a 2nd sensor reserved for the PIWIS tester so they must consider the electronics in the gauge setup to be inaccurate. That's weird.

Wouldn't it be so much easier for Porsche (and other mfgrs. too) to just go back to the simple (and reliable) dipstick? (KISS principle anyone?) I wonder how much time and $$$ Porsche has expended on oil level related issues?
I went through much the same thing with my wife's first BMW (a '07 328 H/T Conv). I did the first oil change myself and intentionally left it almost 1 qt. shy when I refilled it. It was almost a week before the on-board system registered the oil as being 3/4 qt. low. I never trusted that thing after that. It's one thing to be inaccurate on a dry sump car w/ and 11 qt. capacity, quite another on a wet sump w/ 6.5 qts. (IMHO).

I'm sure they don't want owners keeping an eye on exactly how much oil their car is consuming, especially if it's minimal.

Why can't they just be thankful that Porsche decided to build the P!g and leave it at that??
