993 Ignition
Hi Folks
Anyone know of / done any good mods for 993 ignition? Those coils are not fantastic, and rotors / dissy caps are not state of the art for mid 90s...
I see 964s had more 'normal' coils, are they better or just different?
Anyone?
Cheers, Maurice

Hi Graham
Well, a fully electronic system would have been much better - get rid of the mechanical / electrical stuff, rotors/caps/distributors - after all the BMW with 4 valve engine I bought in 1990 had none of that, just electronics and mini-coil per plug....
Cheers, Maurice

I know some people who have upgraded their coils and spark plug wires. But that doesn't address your initial concern about removing those things all together.
I'm still amazed at how bone simple p-car technology has been sometimes. Perhaps that's why it's worked so well?

Hi Maurice,
Maybe you could try this: Perma Tune ignition, their comments in the installation info might also be of interest: Tech info

Thanks, John, I had seen the Permatune stuff, sounded a little snake-oily...
Steve, have you any suggestions for an improved system, or do you think stock is good if rotors/caps are replaced every 30K or so? I noticed the 964 uses more 'normal' coils, are these an upgrade or perhaps not a match for the 993 ignition driver?
Also Steve, can you supply adjustable drop links for the 993 bars?
Cheers, Maurice

Maurice,i must agree with Steve here.I have seen permatune stuff and was never impressed.I have also seen all sorts of aftermarket wonder wires, super coils etc.None made as well, last as long, deliver and more power reliable than the parts Porsche put on the car when they built it.
I have rebuit many 993 based engines including RSR race cars which use the same componants, the cars twist many more rpm all day and all night, never missing a beat,I don't think someones aftermarket anything is going to be any better, regardless of how you measure the possible improvement.Anyway, that is just my opinion,Jerry.

Hi Maurice:
My experience is the same as Jerry's.
The stock ignitions on these cars is more than up to the task and you'll not get any benefits from using an aftermarket solution. Bosch did a very fine job on these things and these ignitions do support over 410 N/A HP.
If you are looking for some additional performance, I'd recommend things that actually work such as:
1) Close-ratio gears
2) A good chip
3) RS flywheel & clutch kit
4) 102mm P/C's
5) RS intake valves & RS Cams
Don't forget to upgrade the valve springs, retainers & rod bolts.
