Default Tuning 924s to early 944 spec?

Is my understanding correct that a 924s has exactly the same engine etc under the hood, part for part, as the 81-85 944 only de-tuned from the 126ish kw (170hp) to 111ish kw (150hp)? If so, is it possible to reverse this factory de-tuning without buying any extra parts?

No, it's lower compression, to restore it you need the 10-1 piston set for the motor.

So it just has different cylinders/internals? But the rest on the engine is the same right (size, mount location etc)? I could swap the engine out of a pre 85 944 no problem if it came up?

Yes, provided you swap just the engine. AFM and DME changed pre 85 to late 85.
