Metal Race Mats. Anybody fabricate their own?
 

I see the aluminum Rennline mats and they look great but @ $250 a pair, I think I might take a stab at my own to outfit my 996 on track and DE days.

I have access to a metal fabrication shop w/CNC equipment among other cool metal fabrication devices (whatever they might be) and thought I might try fabricating my own (actually asking my buddy to do it but I'll be here for moral support)

Can anyone provide a template for drivers and passengers side track mats I could get fab’d from aluminum plate material?

I’ll need to put it in CAD format which I can do but a template or even a hand trace from an existing track mat would be much appreciated.

Also, any thoughts on plate thickness? Is 1/8” adequate or do I need to go thicker?

Is the $250/pr for prefab’d mats well worth the money?

I'm open to comments or other suggestions.... Thanks!

I have the Rennline mats and they are .068" thick. You could use your existing carpet mats as a pattern. I do not think the Rennline are over-priced.

.068" is just over 1/16" which seems thin to me but maybe it's fine. I was thinking I'd have mine done from 3/16" material, 1/8" at the minimum.

I did use my original mats as templates, then created cardboard mockups. I've drawn them in CAD and now have to contact my guy that works in architectural metals to see about having these fab'd and how much it'll run for materials.

Finished my mats last week and they came out great. These are 3/16" alum. They worked out perfect at CMP this past weekend.

I have a set of rennline mats that I purchased used. I'm happy with them other than trying to remove the driver's side mat from the car. My seat has an FE mount and it's near impossible to get the thing out. And the sharp edges seem to scrape every surface in the process.

That said, I've never considered making my own, but I have thought about cutting mine and installing a piano hinge so that I can fold it and then remove it.

If you don't have a seat-mounted FE, this is a non-issue. But if you do... beware.

Spinout, your mats look great and I agree $250/each is to much money . Question, why do you need them if you still have the carpet and foam in your car (its additional weight). I think in your scenario you should have used stick plastic sheet to protect the carpet. How much did the cut job cost you? Mark
