964 C4 upgrades
Hi
I am starting to upgrade my 964 C4 1990, I live in Spain and I only use the car on weekends only normal street use no racing, the first step was a custom chip and a KN filter, I have also performed the holes on the filter, carrera cup 2 17" wheels. I have just purchased a cup bypass primary muffler.I have no actual numbers of the gains but after installing the chip the cars seems "much lighter".
Now I am planning to install a throttle body from a 95 993, but I have no idea if this will be any benefit to my car or is just a waist of time I also have the opportunity to install the MAF sensor from that 993 (I must also say this 993 is from the US, and my car has European specs).
Can anyone help?
Thanks
ALEX

Joel Reiser had a pretty good discussion on alternatives in his article "Late Model Performance Enhancement" in the August 1999 PCA "Panorama".

Alex,
I used to love fiddling with my 964 C4...particularly in the area of engine modifications. Rather than go down the route of a chip, I installed the Racers Group Unichip piggy back system given that it allowed the car to be customised to local fuel requirements and the specific car in question. I also slapped on the full 993 Varioram system with the 993 MAF. Besides that, I had all tried all the other usual mods at different stages including K&N cone filter, cup by pass, U tube with stock muffler etc.
All I will say is that the 5 months before I ended up selling my 964 were close to the best times I had with the car, and that was after spending a small fortune completely putting the car back to stock!
At the end of the day, daily reliability and driveability were the most important things and the miniscule gains made from the modifications really were offset by the irratic behaviour of the car at times.
Having learnt from this, my current car, a 993, remains completely stock, and if anything, I would probably spend on suspension and brakes and lots of practice to increase my speed rather than modifying the engine.
On the other hand, if you really want more power, save the bucks and install a RUF RCT Evo conversion....that would be reliable and an incredible improvement on the stock car.
Just my 2 cents....

Thank you very much for your help, I´ve seen your web page maybe you can help me with a doubt, I have changed the wheels to the 993Cup 2 wheels and the car looks nice but a bit lower would be nicer, I have been offered with a set of H&R springs which lower the car 40mm I don´t know if this is two low or not, also for the moment I am not planning to change the original shock absorbers I will have to wait or my wife will throw me out with the car...
Is it maybe too low? or is it in the normal range?
Thanks

All modifications require time and effort to research so that you don't make mistakes that can be expensive to correct.
Find out exactly what these springs are and make sure that they fit your model year.
Some people upgrade only the springs and are happy. Some try it and are definitely not happy. .I would wait until you can do both shocks and springs. All IMHO.

Alex,
Contact Diana at admin@pcanational.org, who says they do have some of the 1999 Pano issues still available.

I have also tried lots of mods on my 1990 C4, mostly quite successful.
The following combination has made a big difference in power, according to the butt dyno and positive feedback from Porsche-files including some of the best DE instructors in the NorthEast:
Performance Chip (Andial)
K&N Cone Filter
B&B Dual Outlet Muffler
RS Single-Mass Flywheel
RS Clutch
Cup engine mounts
Other upgrades include:
BK Shock Tower Brace
H&R Coilovers
AJ-USA Adjustable Sway Bars
Latest project:
GT Racing fiberglass widebody kit
18" Kinesis Supercups (8.5x11)
PZero Rosso 225/40; 285/30
AJ 3-spoke Airbag wheel

I'm curious what you paid for the kit and what it cost to have it prepped and painted? As well as the wheels? 7 or 8 years ago I first ran into a real turbo at a DE at NHIS (i think from shrewsbury/worcester,ma) and i've wanted that widebody look (with the 3 piece cup wheels) ever since.
thanks,

Andial told me they only sell their performance chip to their customers.

Bill - I bought the chip through an independent shop. Let me know if you want one and I might be able to facilitate...
Jason - I bought the fiberglass kit for 10% off of the price of individual pieces. I think that the prices are on-line. Hank advertises in Excellence and other mags. Let me know if you need help. I think it was around $2k, though. The wheels were around $2550, plus tax and shipping. I ordered them through a local shop owned by a friend.
