Post Transmission Question

What does it mean when ppl say the tranmission cant handle the car's power? for example, someone told me once that if you put a supercharger on a 993/996, it might be better to use a five speed instead of six.. if the explaination is that gear ratio will suit the power curve (low end torque) better then i might understand a bit more.. but if not, why? or for another car, like 993/996, if you turbocharge those cars, its better to change the tranny, for better gear ratio? or the stock tranny cant handle the power? what might happen? I need to be enlightened.. thanks for your feedback =)

They mean the teeth get torn off the gears like corn off a cob. Or sometimes a shaft inside the trans bends.

Think of it this way:

If you take the cardboard tube from a paper towel roll with one hand at each end and twist - it collapses. It collapses because it's not stong enough to resist the torque you are applying. The transmission on your car is designed to withstand a certain amount of torque. If you drastically increase the power, you run the risk of breaking your transmission because it's not designed to withstand what you are doing to it.

On a 993, there are differences between the "standard" G50/20 transmission and the /30, /31 or /32 transmissions for the RS or CS that make the transmission stronger (it's not just gear ratio changes). There are also differences between the transmission of a normal car and a turbo for the same reason.

The same thing is true with a 996. A GT2 has a stronger transmission than a stock 996 to handle the added power. It's not a simple change of bolting on a bigger turbocharger.

It sounds like what your mechanic is saying is that someone modified the car to increase the horsepower/torque but did not do the modifications to the transmission that would be required. You are running the risk that when you start to try and use all that power you will destroy your transmission.
