Im doing this
Rick is helping me with this conversion. I am putting the enging out of an 84 into a 71, 914. I am in the parts gathering stage now and will be sending stuff up to him soon. In late Jan ill make a run up to his shop and cut down the trans and make the front mount. With the parts Im pre sending I should be on the way for a spring running. His car is known as the Alien we call mine PLAN 9. I am up here by Dallas and once it starts to go together you can come look and see if this is something you may want to take on.

Just curious, which weighs more the engine or the body.
Should be a sick toy when done.

Measure how much width you can have. I know a small block chevy will go but this is a wider engine. Nice thing though is all the plugs and fuel injection stuff is on top and easy to get to.

I have been told that the 928 engine won't fit in the 944. I know a guy that puts Chevs in 944's, but I think that is sacreligious. I was told that the reason it won't fit is because the mastercylinder is in the way, along with the power steering thingie. If anyone ever does it, please post, because I think it would make a cool car. Not that I don't think the 914/928 would be cool. But I have a whole sh--load of 944's.

I doubt the 928 would fit without cutting the inner fenders out of a 944. The 'V' angle of the Chevy vs the 928 is very different which side by side is very obvious. I would say the 928 is 10+ inches wider than the Chevy!!

I am not denying what you say, but I do have a couple of questions. The engine compartment looks symetrical. If the 944 is half of a 928, and the center of the crank is in the center of the car, then it would seem that the other half would fit, if you could find some place for the master cylinder, and related stuff. I guess that really wasn't a question, but hopefully, you understand what I am saying.
I have never tried to put one in, but I think it would be cool to do.

I see what you are saying but you really have to see a 928 engine in person to see what I mean. Also it does depend on the engine too. A 16V 928 has a fighting chance of fitting but a 32V is much too big.

The s4 engine in a 944 would be very potent indeed. my 3500 lb. s4 makes 0-60 in the 5.2-5.4 range with light mods. If a 944 weighs about 2800 lb. it is reasonable to assume 0-60 around 4.6-4.8. makes me want to try this!

Don't forget when you shoehorn a 928 engine into a 944 the weight will be closer to 3200 pounds you are looking at an engine that weighs more than twice that of the 944's not to mention the additional pluming and suspension needed to compensate. Also you will be throwing your perfect 50/50 weight distribution out.
How do you convert the live axle and rear mounted tranny to fit a 944?
To bad you can't put a cayenne turbo engine in you will have 450hp with 460 ft pounds of torque. The 5500 pound CT will do 0-60 in 5.0 with a 13.5 quarter mile. There is one for sale at the salvage house in CA only thing left is the engine.
