Received my new PIWIS III

3 yays or likes and similar to our Cayenne / 992 / Macan brethrens, I’ll start a new PIWIS coding features-only thread with codings that worked for the Panamera, leaving this one as how to procure / setup / connect / troubleshoot the underlying soft & hardware.

Developer manual page 11
It looks like we are missing page 11. I see links to 1-10 and links for files with pages 12-350 but not page 11. If anyone has it could you please post link or PM me the page please?

I'm having my 17" MacBook repaired but decided I better just get a used PC laptop for PIWIS. My new Mac M1 Max is unable to run the VM Ware PIWIS as far as I know-Fusion 13 came out and supports The new MacBook ARM computers, but after searching it seems it will not run older VMs(x86 I believe they're called-)
I would like to use the 2.5 data SSD I put in the old Mac, so I'm beginning to search for laptops that meet the PIWIS requirements-
1920x1080 resolution is a requirement, 8GB of RAM, and regular USB ports. A lot of newer laptops don't have a regular/older USB port anymore,, though I suppose an adapter can be used-
So, since I'm not too familiar with PC laptops, could someone please post guidelines on which to search for on eBay or craigslist? I don't think older ones would be available from Best Buy, but maybe they are-I went to 2 used/repair shops nearby and none had laptops with 1080 resolution Which version of Windows should the laptop have?
Most setups seem to use Lenovo laptops-if someone could suggest the models I'd appreciate it. I prefer 15"-17" screens, 13'" and 14" seem too small to me-
Should I also look at Dell and other brands too? I'll start a search now, I'll opt for 256 GB drives and use the 1TB SSD I already spent money on-assuming these laptops use a sata 2.5" drive-
Also, I have my PIWIS as a VM Ware-is it possible to get the installation file from a VM and install on the Windows laptop?
Thanks
JB

Hey John, yes, alas like you I was forced to go over to the dark side - and it's dismal. Windows10 is like a Mac in the 90s. However, we must in the end do what one must.
I got a Lenovo Yoga ThinkPad which has the advantage of being a touch screen. I found plenty reasonably priced on eBay, and other than Windows being as user friendly as a cornered rat I've not had any issues running PIWIS. Don't intend to run any patches as that will be its only use. AAFOF, I run my VAG-COM on WinXP SP2 netbook.
Now if only I could run this in VMS on a Vax...
Take the plunge...

Will works.
As for VMware mechine, it will works on windows as long as it has the same vhardware version.
If it was build on V mware 17 on the mac, it must be played using same vmware version on windows.

While a large screen is of course nice, a smaller device is much easier to handle while on or in the car. Menus and fonts are large so a smaller screen than e.g. the above Dell works fine.
I hate to handle a larger / heavier laptop while in the car..
My recommendation is either a Lenovo Yoga or (my personal preference) a Panasonic Toughbook CF-MX4 or any similar Panasonic Toughbook (Magnesium chassis, very lightweight yet robust and perfect to handle, touchscreen can be used like a tablet, size is exactly like a sheet of A4 Paper)
Also, strong recommendation to use a native version, no VM, simply to rule out any speed or interface issues and stick to original setup.

Agree, a tablet like the Launch would be even better.

Alas... this will surely go down a rabbit hole real fast. 45 years in computing and nets/comms and to see what Windows10 is in 2023... . My windows machines are quarantined from my network and only used when needed whether PIWIS (win10) VAG-COM or Visio (a great program until M$ bought them) on WinXP SP2.

I found some some very cheap ones, like this one:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/39439773654...dS7YQ&LH_BIN=1
And one with higher resolution:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/13441753976...v9rth&LH_BIN=1
There are fewer models larger than 14"-this one is 15.6"
https://www.ebay.com/itm/33466514639...Pi7YQ&LH_BIN=1
Also reading that it says it has an Administrator lock on BIOS settings (?)I suppose that's something to look out for_
So it seems few are larger than 14", and many are now running Windows 11-is that a problem to run PIWIS, to is W11 ok?:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/15536463575...Pi7YQ&LH_BIN=1
Looks like a decent 14" Lenovo will be around $300-Apple's 17" like mine have the GPU issue where it overheats over the years, and if the repair/workaround isn't worth it, I can get a 2014-2015 15" MacBook Pro with warranty from OWC and other vendors, with 90 days to 1 year warranty. And I could migrate all my. apps and data. As mentioned, my brand new Apple M1 Max can't run certain apps and even with Fusion, Parallels or the new Virtual Box, x86 VMs can not run with it. From all my searching, recommendations are to keep an Intel Mac for the older VMs, it's the only solution-
Since I have PIWIS as VM, and if it's not possible to extract the installer for use in a PC laptop, I would have the added expense of getting the PIWIS software for Windows, adding again to the expenses . So I have to think over the options-
Siberian-I use obdeleven for my Audi S3, very affordable, wifi and bluetooth, on a 10" Samsung Tab-very good setup, all VW/Audi users have moved on to the platform. Also works on Lamborghini, Bentley and now BMW-
This turned into a long post, but I'm sure it will benefit others with plans to get a system. Things sure changed from getting the complete system from Chinese vendors-those sites still seem to be operating, though I wouldn't recommend it to any new users-
Best,
JB
