is my oil/air separator working? Video Included
Hey all, i have higher oil consumption and an indy mechanic mentioned possible crank case vent valve as he saw some oil in there. I think the oil/air separator is the crank case vent valve is that correct? I heard about the oil cap test to test the oil/air separator and i posted the video here. The cap was hard to take off but it did eventually come off. If I can get some peoples thoughts on whether they think this is an oil/air separator issue?

Your going to pull vacuum whether the AOS is working or not so the suction test may be subjective. Direct measurement is more accurate, you should normally see 4 - 5 vs 10-12 (or higher, in inches of water I think) in the case of a failure. In my 911's case, when the AOS went out I heard a whistling sound under certain conditions (coasting vs on the gas), and indeed did see the substantial white puff of smoke when restarting. My guess is your AOS is probably still okay.

i dont get smoke upon startup but sometimes i see smoke coming out in rearview while at a stop light or backing up....more smoke then i think is normal.
also i remember the cap being very hard to take off, took me a few attempts....are there other panamera owners who can test to see how hard it is to take off their oil cap at idle?

Ok, went out and tried mine, while there is noticeable vacuum it is fairly easy to remove - your's was orders of magnitude harder than mine.
I'm still leaning towards the separator being bad.

checked mine this morning, and it wasn't too tough to take off either. One thing I did notice when the suction is first broken I briefly can hear a little rattle at the AOS, presumably the valve/diagram in there is doing its thing sensing the loss of vacuum. So maybe your AOS is failing - although may not still be the primary culprit for higher oil consumption. Good news is that if the AOS does eventually fail, it should be pretty easy to diy it as it is right there on the right hand side manifold. It was a PITA to replace my '04 911's AOS- took all weekend and then some!

Air/oil sep failed on my 2015 991TT at 6K miles. Heard "beeping" coming from the engine compartment
and a search turned up that I wasn't the only one. Known issue w/Porsche. Warranty covered $1300 repair.
Lots of plumbing to remove for access in the Turbo!

Per my signature, I have a 2012 Turbo S. I had a little oil residue on top of the engine cover, but for all I know that was from the last person that changed the oil. I wiped it off and its not come back. I drove the car 2000 miles, notice the oil level with a couple ticks from "add" level, added 3/4 of a QT and it hasn't moved a tick since and I'm at 4000 miles. I cleaned the throttle body out last night, and ran some CRC cleaner through for the valves and the turbos. The throttle body and intake inlet had hardly any dirt or oil, and I got basically nothing from wiping it off. Just a little smug, so I'm assuming that's good.
I did notice there is a little vacuum pulling off the oil cap while at idle, but I'm assuming that would be perfectly normal. It wasn't physically hard to pull off, you could just feel the suction and the noise while pulling it off, and once the seal was broken was easier to pull off. I have no idea what is a normal amount, or when too much suction means you're AOS is going to blow up. I'd like to know though. Is a catch can really needed in a car that has an AOS? Would that just help keep things cleaner? I'm curious.
I'm also curious as to what things to look for when the AOS starts to go.

Attempted to upload a video - I think mine had gotten worse over the last few weeks.
Oil Consumption is not bad. 1.5 QT in 4000 miles. It does seem to idle a bit more rough but I need to check the plugs for the 40,000 mile maintenance.
