Default 971 4 vs 4S - Help!

Guys,

New to the forum, but was hoping to get some color on the differences between the Panemera 4 and 4S.

a typical dealer spec'd 4 has an MSRP of $100-105k, while the 4S seems to be in and around $120-130k.

As a daily driver, is the extra power worth it? Is it noticeable?

I know in the 970 - the difference between the two was significant, but was curious to know whether that gap had tightened.

Thanks.

Didn't test drive 4S but got the 4 recently which is pretty decent for a DD. I wish it had a bit more power like around 360-380 for a 105K car. 4S is a second faster from 0-60 which I'm guessing is close to 991 4s in pickup that I can relate to! If you can afford then go for 4S or the E-hybrid. Good luck!

The problem with the 4s is that used turbo pricing is slipping below 140k. I'd suggest asking about insurance rates. Sometimes asking first may save thousands per year and may dictate decision.

I have a 17 4S and had a base 971 for about 4 days as a loaner. Big diffence in power. The base model drives good. The 4S drives phenomenal.

Same here, test drove the 4s in Summer, couldn't stomach the price with everything I wanted in it. It really depends what you're looking for out of this car. That extra HP still doesn't turn it into a Sports car (to me, my IMO) and didn't value it enough.

7 Months later... I just bought a "4" today, amazing car, test drove a bunch others but none had the same feel of a Porsche. Basically a base 4 (metallic black) with 21 wheels + Premium Package Plus.

It is noticeable. You're talking 330 hp vs. 440 hp. Whether it is worth it depends on how you want to drive.

We just bought a 2018 4 for my wife. She does not need any more hp than that. Further, it's not just the extra almost $14K for the S, but if you are going to use that hp, you should get air suspension and rear axle steering, and that adds several more thousand to the msrp.

If you are located in the U.S. you might want to think about the 4 E-Hybrid. Reason being you will get a $6670 tax credit (not a write off but real money) and thus the price difference between the Panamera 4 and the 4 E-Hybrid isn't all that much money, but you get 462hp versus the 330 for the base model. Also, there is absolutely no turbo lag with the E-Hybrid whereas I did notice some lag with the 4S. All of that said, I'm still waiting for my car to be released from San Diego port but if you are ordering now then you most likely won't have to wait except for the build and ship.

+1. I am still waiting like Saratoga. My reasoning was the same. The 4E comes with sport chromo and air suspension as well. Even after a long wait because of EPA hold, I would still do the 4E.

You are correct; I forgot about the air suspension and the Sport Chrono packages being standard on the E-Hybrid. The base price on the Panamera 4 in the US is $89400 and when you add in the air suspension ($2190) and the Sport Chrono ($2270) the total comes up to $94060. The base price on the E-Hybrid is $99600 but after the tax credit of $6670 it becomes $92930, so you are getting an extra 132 HP and saving $130. Seems like a no brainer to me.

But, what about the extra 700 Lbs? That is similar to having three large passengers in each of the seats.

Yes that is correct. But the acceleration of the E-Hybrid has been clocked on numerous reviews at 4 seconds flat zero to sixty even though Porsche officially says 4.4 seconds. I think the Panamera 4 comes in around 5 seconds so that is quite a difference. Also I guess the extra 22 HP versus the 4S essentially makes up most of the difference in acceleration and there is no turbo lag which I did experience when test driving the 4S. Some reviews have indicated the extra weight of the batteries actually helps with the handling although I am somewhat skeptical about that. Regardless, to me the E-Hybrid makes a lot of sense given the IRS tax credit and the ability to drive on electric alone. Not really overly excited about the increased gas mileage, but that is also a nice feature. To each his own and that is what makes the Panamera so interesting.

Saratoga - hope you are well bud!

Do you have any links to those reviews? Have always thought it felt that quick.

Having taken an eHybrid and 4S round the Porsche experience centre I cannot say I noticed a difference in terms of weight - neither is a 911 but both are very comfortable, fast and fun enough.

My dealer is saying that a fire at the engine plant is causing a shortage of the 4S?
