    Ed,

Is $23,500 a Greg Byrd Socal thing without getting deep into the engine? I know I can do maintence and small repairs myself to help but this has me concerned that I may want to try and buy a well sorted maintained 928 instead, having the 928 running as you suggested makes much more sense too.

If I'm being a PITA please let me know and I'll back off.

Thanks again I do appreciate your time and knowledge helping me with this decision.

Not knowing what is needed, for parts, makes this virtually impossible. One piece can throw off any estimate, buy hundreds of dollars.

However, I will try to get you an idea.

We haven't done a timing belt/ water pump, oil pump gear, tensioner rebuild, rollers for less than $3500, in the past couple of years.
Timing gears and resealing the front of the engine can add another $1500.

Very doubtful that an engine with 60,000 miles on it will need a complete rebuild.

However, very likely that the head gaskets will be very bad. Depending on condition if the heads and studs, if the intake needs to be redone, hardware replacing, vacuum hoses, spark plug wires, water hoses, dampers and regulators, fuel hoses, pretty easy to spend 15K, for this.

Will probably need a pan gasket and motor mounts, steering rack boots, steering hoses.$3500.

    Hope this helps you.

From what I've read on the forums over the years as I've dreamed of buying a 928 you are the man when comes to any service or rebuilding of a 928.I

I'm working on purchasing the 928 I referred to in the thread and I have a vague question.

    So here's my question.

If I was to have the 928 shipped to you for a inspection and have all work done ( no time limit of course) can you give me a high low estimate (TB/water pump, fuel lines, normal 60k mile car needs, etc)
also with worst case senario of the engine being rebuilt.

From what I've seen from pictures the 928 is in excellent condition in and out and has been well maintained by this original west coast family owned car ( many service recipts too). Of course I'm trying to buy at the lowest price possible. The owner has told me the engine has no issues aside from some lifter noise when 1st started.

Thank you for your response in advance.

    Hi Ed,

Checking on where to have the if purchased 928 serviced and I reached out to Greg in SoCal, very knowledgeable like yourself, servicer somone who the Porsche community trusts.
I sent him this vague email and he kind of scared me into thinking about buying a well sorted and maintanted 928 instead, I'm assuming he's giving me a worst case senario?
Sent email and response to follow..

    Hi Ed,

    Really appreciate your help.

Thought I'd mention I just looked at your info and see you owned a Iris Blue 86.5, crazy. You also own a 07 GT500, I sell Ford's, so great choice, just delivered a new Heritage 500 to a friend, amazing cars.
I'm also looking at a 16 Audi AWD A6 3.0 TDI, any opinions on the diesel, 36k miles, apologies for all the questions.

    Thanks

    Joe

    Hello linderpat,

Would you mind providing me with your impression of your friend Dougs' '88 S4 currently for sale? (mechanicals, cosmetics, and anything else that comes to mind).

If I won the auction, taking delivery of the car would mean flying in and driving home, which for me living in southern Illinois would be about 1600 miles. Needless to say the whole sight-unseen thing is cause for concern, especially as I've been burned once before.

As PPI's are always suggested, would you be able to recommend anyone local who knows 928's who could be enlisted to give the car a once over in the next few days? It sounds like Doug has done a lot since he's had the car, but maybe there are other issues that still need attention?

And one last best case scenario what-if. If I ended up flying out to pick up the car, any suggestions of a good hotel in the Bozeman area for getting rested up for the drive home?

    Thanks in advance,

    Patrick
