This Karmann-bodied coupe was built on January 16, 1963 and is a numbers-matching car in exceptional unrestored condition. It still has its original paint, interior, engine, gearbox, lids and date-coded wheels. Amazingly, the car is also believed to retain its original trim, Koni shocks and muffler as well. The odometer shows 92,000 miles, which is believed to be accurate.
Equipped with a Super 90 engine, the most powerful pushrod engine offered by Porsche at that time, it was ordered with headrests, chrome wheels and BBAB “Speedster” gears. Weber carbs and K&N filters were installed under prior ownership along with an electric fuel pump, PermaTune electronic ignition, racing-latch seatbelts and extra below-dash VDO gauges for oil pressure and temperature.
The car was voted “best original 356” at the Nord Stern PCA regional meet in the summer of 1989, was 5th in its class - “Foreign Sports Closed, 1948-1970” - at the 2002 Lime Rock Vintage Festival concours, and won the "patina award" for original cars at the 2013 Connecticut Valley Region PCA concours.
The car’s original jack, toolkit, Solex carbs and Knecht air filters remain with the car and will be sold with it. The car also comes with a copy of its Kardex, a Certificate of Authenticity and maintenance records from my 22-year ownership. Much of the prior history of the car is known and documented.
This car is a strong runner in good mechanical condition. It has been very well cared for by all of its custodians over the last 60 years. Every effort has been made to retain its originality; the only exceptions are the modifications referred to above, the replacement of the dash pad vinyl and the replacement of wear items (eg, tires, etc.). There are relatively few 356 survivor vehicles left, especially black/red cars as highly optioned as this one.
