Description:

Up for sale is a very unique and likely one of less than a handful of cars with a Jake Raby/Flat Six Innovations 4.2L beast of an engine. If that wasn't special enough, the engine has been mated to a 987.2 Cayman R (PDK) which as most here already know is one of the best mid-engine driver's cars out there.

History on the car is impeccable having been ordered/spec'd and owned since new by just a single owner car with majority of its life in California before I purchased it in 2021 and had it transported in an enclosed trailer to Texas. Clean title/carfax with no accident, paintwork or damage history as far as I am aware.

Original owner spared no expense and in desiring to have the most powerful engine built by FSI at the time had an elective reconstruction performed in 2015 when the original motor had about 30k miles. Those familiar with Flat 6 Innovations work will know that they began working on 9A1 engine soon after its release and in 2010 working with LN Engineering produced their first 4.2L engine which debuted in what was called Cayman X and featured in December 2013 edition of Panorama Magazine (pg 66-71).

Original owner subsequently put a little over 40K miles in the following years testifying to the reliability and joy of driving the transformed engine which came with increased low speed performance, increased throttle response and more torque across the entire rev band.

Quite frankly the car feels as fast as other 911 Porsche I have owned or driven (several including 991 Carrera S/GTS, 997 GT3)

In addition to the 4.2L motor, numerous other upgrades were also done on the car including the following:

1. Deep sump oil pan system

2. Third radiator

3. IPD plenum

4. ~$4k exhaust upgrade: Fabspeed racing headers

5. ~$7k exhaust upgrade: Capristo MK2 valved exhaust that sounds amazing (

6. ~$8k brake upgrade: Brembo GT big brake kit with 2 piece brembo rotors on front and rears (https://flat6motorsports.com/collect...cayman-boxster, https://flat6motorsports.com/collect...cayman-boxster)

7. Custom professional audio upgrades including two amps, custom subwoofer enclosures in the rear trunk, upgraded speakers all while maintaining the original headunit

The original owner sadly passed away unexpectedly and unfortunately in late 2019 with the vehicle remaining with his family until they decided to part with it in early 2021. Wife of the original owner indicated the car was her husband's pride & joy with no expense spared in the care and maintenance of the vehicle and as can be seen by the number of other upgrades performed. Wife also indicated that car was primarily used as daily driver (accounting for the miles) and not tracked and the original owner was someone who was mechanically inclined and enjoyed performing a lot of the work and service on the vehicle on his own in the years preceding his death. Unfortunately this does mean that maintenance records we were able to obtain were sparse as well as some of the documentation of the FSI build including the USB flash drive containing all the details of the build was unable to be located.

I was able to get ahold of some documentation and some of the pictures of the engine teardown and reconstruction which can be shared. As a courtesy to the original owner and his wife, Jake was kind enough to speak with me and share details of the build and the car but please be mindful of Jake's policy on this (and as per FSI website) and please do not hound Jake for details about the build or expecting warranty or support of any kind from FSI.

It is well known that Jake Raby/Flat 6 Innovation engine builds are legendary and anyone looking at a new build is likely facing a lengthy wait-time and significant costs. For more specific information about the Flat 6 Innovation engine program please review their website, Youtube videos and other information seen across forums.

I had a PPI done in California which checked out and given an opportunity to own a rare and unique Porsche didn't hesitate to pick it up immediately. As mentioned earlier I had the vehicle shipped in an enclosed carrier from California to Texas in late May.

I immediately performed engine oil & filter replacement with Flat 6 Innovations recommended engine oil (Joe Gibbs Driven DI40). I also replaced spark plugs, performed a brake flush and replaced the engine air filter and cabin filters with all OEM parts. I have since added over 2000 miles with current mileage at just over 73K.

I had additional plans for this vehicle but between starting a new job, having a new born and an upcoming move, I don't have the time to drive it enough and have made the difficult decision to put the car up for sale.

This unique Cayman R 4.2L build is versatile in that it provides for amazing spirited drives on a weekend (which is how I have enjoyed it during my time) or can become an ideal track vehicle project for someone else.

The vehicles exterior and interior remain in great condition for the vehicle’s chassis mileage and the Silver Platinum paint is my personal favorite on the Cayman R series.

Ownership title is in my name and in hand, I will try to respond to all serious inquiries as quickly as I can (I may be able to respond to emails, txt messages sooner than returning calls).

I may have my brother respond on technical questions given that he is more hands-on/DIY and has performed routine maintenance and other work on the Porsches we've owned over the years.

My brother also happens to have a 987.2 3.4L long block (engine located in Austin) that he bought planning for a project that never materialized. It was purchased from a gentleman here on Rennlist who had a 2011 Boxster S with 40k miles and did an elective swap to a 3.8L. This was a fully working motor with no signs of any issues before it was removed by a very reputable shop in NJ and sealed/palleted for shipment. The accessories, intake, wiring harness were swapped over to the 3.8.

The engine is available separately (not included in this pricwe) in case the owner wants to return the Cayman R to it's more original form or perhaps has another track dedicated build where the 4.2L motor could be used.

The vehicles exterior and interior remain in great condition for the vehicle’s chassis mileage and the Silver Platinum paint is my personal favorite on the Cayman R series.

Asking price is reasonably priced at $65,000. I'm not interested in any trades or consignments or parting out of any of the upgrades so please don't ask. Car is being sold as is with no warranty. Given the current market, the rarity and demand for Cayman Rs in general as well as the upgrades and a motor built by the legendary F6I in this car, I believe I've priced it more than fairly while also taking in to account that I do not have the time for window shoppers or a BAT level inquisition. Quite simply, come see the car in person and experience it for yourself (test drives available only with deposit/proof of ID/insurance or otherwise more than happy to take it out for a drive with prospective buyer in the passenger seat).
Thanks for reading/looking.

I saw that, but it’s not mentioned in the actual write up, so I am wanting the seller to confirm.

I don't want to turn the tread into a discussion on the merits of a F6I upgrade but suffice it to say that the significant costs and lengthy wait time does not appear to have deterred many, as they have performed hundreds of modifications. They also claim that various independent shops across the country have gone through their training programs and are then likely better equipped to work on these cars.

https://ww2.pca.org/panoreader/dec-2013/#page=69 I can only assume that there was further development after this first engine.

Thanks for the link. This build was done in 2015 so even a few years later then when that article came out and of course yes it appears they have continued to build the 9A1 program even though their original focus and a lot of their demand was/remains on M96/97 engines. Please see their website for more information about them.

Still available, in this market this Cayman R represents great value and power for the money. Willing to price lower without the 987.2 3.4L long block in the deal and open to reasonable offers.

This car is a bargain. Can’t believe someone hasn’t swooped it up yet.
