Last 18,000 miles: water pump, power steering pump, front bumper air intake screens, new floor mats, new starter

Last 5000 miles – 4 new Continental tires, idle pulley, driver side window regulator, Mass air sensor,  Air idle valve, hood struts, downstream O2 sensors, oil pressure relief valve, coolant temperature sensor, engine mounts

Just completed May ’21 - $12K engine out to repair cam chain deviation.  Bore scoped before commencing work.  AutoEngineering, Lexington MA, 12 month 12k mile warranty: If you are looking at ‘98,’99,’00 five chain cars, you will need this work done, the plastic guides get eaten up over 20 years. (see photos)  Much more likely fail point than IMS or bore scoring on these early cars.  Also a source for dreaded “ticking” engine.  Work completed: replace timing chains, all chain guides, both cam tensioners. (2 @ $1400 a piece) replaced IMS chain tensioners (2), bank 2 hydraulic valve lifters, all ancillary parts, seals, gaskets, and labor for cam chain deviation.  “While he was in there” New spark plug tubes, updated coil packs, spark plugs, air oil separator, clutch kit and flywheel, transmission mount, IMS seal.

You read about ‘sorted’ cars, this one surely ranks up there with any 1999 available.  Drives beautifully, engine smooth and quiet, terrific suspension.  I am a 14 year PCA member and have owned three 996’s.  Two kids in college requires me to recoup some of the money I have put into this car.
