Description:

My engine had the timing chain break through the passenger side cam cover. The chain tensioner probably had some failure. The engine was IMMEDIATELY shut off on the country road where this occurred, and the car was towed from then on. The complete engine was then replaced with another 2014 3.4L S engine. The only known damage to the engine is to the affected bank of cylinders, and as far as I know the block is good. This engine has NOT been taken apart at all, and it ran perfectly until the failure occurred.
Please contact me with any questions, and I will do my best to answer them without knowledge of the internals.
The transplant engine was Complete, and the engine for sale is a Complete one (including everything shown in the photos).

Hi Calbikeboy,

I am doing a bit of research would really appreciate answers to following questions,
What type of journeys did car do, (1) mostly long distance, (2) mostly short urban, (3) short urban with odd long distance (4) (a) was stop/start technology always turned on, (b) mostly on (c) always off (d) mostly off.

Regards,

Rob.

Rob,
I bought the car a month and a half before the engine issue.....I can not answer your questions. My second Cayman (other a 987 2009 PDK which was great).....Stuff happens.

The thing is, the 987 didn`t have stop/start technology but did have the longer timing chains which Porsche initially discounted in the 986 as running too fast, which could cause undue wear and early chain failure.
You had no issues with the 987 but did in the 981 with stop/start, ( estimated life time starts with stop/start 600,000, without stop/start 60,000, food for thought.
