Default Allocation Availability

I've been trying to get an allocation with a few local (Bay Area) dealers and am being told that allocations are limited, and that I may have to wait until 2025 before I can order mine. Is this more or less the case around the US?

Perhaps they meant the 2025 model year??

I've spoken to two dealers in the SE that I've done business with and both said the same things:
- allocations are pretty limited - dealer A had 1, dealer B had 2 (these were all with build dates in May/June and initial estimated delivery in July)
- all of these allocations were for Macan 4 (neither dealer got a turbo allocation)
- when I spoke to them last week none of them were taken (I took one of them)

For the Northwest, I've been told August or September as a 2025.

I sure wish these were available for European Delivery...

Yeah. I should add that since submitting my order the Porsche system moved the delivery date to September. It shows the car arriving in Houston in June but sitting in the port for three months. I am not putting much stock in these dates this far out. Until we close in on the freeze date, I'm ignoring all of it.

My understanding is that allocations are limited. There was availability in my area last week, although that could have changed. You can probably get allocations if you’re willing to look outside the Bay Area and want a 4 versus Turbo.

I think there’s going to be interest in the EV, despite what the people at the other Macan forum website will tell you (which is why I’m here, can’t take it any more).

Good info so far, thanks for sharing. I'm interested in the Turbo and perhaps that is one reason I'm being told that I will need to wait until next year (i.e. zero allocations for that model yet). If anyone knows of any Turbo allocations being issued I'd be interested in knowing.

Funny, I was on the other site just this afternoon, and wondering idly if there was any point in asking to have my account deleted, rather than just no longer using it. In lieu of useful analysis of the pros and cons of EVs as they exist today, we get ideology: rants about government intrusion on supposed personal freedoms. On the positive side, Kyle with Out of Specs Reviews is a fount of useful knowledge.

I drive a 2019 Macan which I love and which is still in like-new condition, but I'm about 80% certain that I'll order an EV Turbo soon. As Kyle points out, you need the Turbo to get the amazing acceleration (granted that no one actually needs that kind of acceleration), but Porsche has also packaged the Turbo with almost every feature I would want as standard, which the 4 does not. In that sense, it's actually a good deal, relative to the 4.

If the first EVs do get held in port, it might be awaiting EPA certification. That happened with my ICE Macan. Just a guess.

A dealership in the Seattle area is now saying 2025. They claim to have 40-50 deposits in hand.

For a product as rapidly in flux as EVs, a year is a long time. I still have bad memories of taking delivery of my Stanley Steamer in 1924.

I live in an area where EVs aren’t popular, so maybe there is some truth in the statement. However, that seems like a lot of deposits for the EV. Most dealers in my area refused to even take deposits until it was officially announced.

I don’t get the impression that allocations are scarce, exactly. These aren’t S/Ts. Rather there’s a huge wait list. In big city land, I mean hundreds of serious customers with deposits, real interest, and buying history. For my dealer alone. Porsche built 20,000 taycans in their first year world wide. Always some teething problems with a new architecture and new logistical chain. But that would likely mean < 100 per dealer until 2025, unless production ramps faster. My dealer has 3-4 customers for each of those build slots.

fiddle with the numbers to whatever wild guesses you think appropriate

TL;DR I think you’ll see a ton of these, and a lot of RL folks won’t have trouble getting them with long buying history, but they’ll still be hard to get for most people. In a couple years, or less, they’ll be pumping out 40,000 a year and every soccer mom in North America will have one.

I don’t know why some dealers (claim) not to have any turbo allocations. It’s possible allocations are proportional to taycan sales. That’s the kind of thing Porsche might do.

I find it interesting that on one hand we have many people complaining about how quickly Taycan is depreciating and how buying a new 1st-gen EV is the worst financial decision they've ever made.

Then based on this thread people are rushing to buy another 1st-gen EV (albeit not the 1st ever EV from Porsche).

Maybe just two different groups of people I guess.

Don’t buy an EV if you are concerned about depreciation.

Also, with this being a crossover versus a sedan, you’re going to get new and differing levels of interest.

Edit: even my ICE Macan has depreciated like a rock over the past few years. Hard to care about it anymore.
