Hello guys,
I read this thread hard. I bouht my first Porsche because all my life I wanted Porsche. On my old times I have its.
I bought car no for track days but for his engineering. Now I read that gt4 has problem with 3rd level transmission -
Each year I drive no more 2.000km. My car was build 23.5.2016. I bought car as new from Germany on July.
I leave in Slovakia where we have no more than 5 pieces GT4. Now I have 3.947km and car is driving only summer months on good ways.
From oktober 2017 wait me in garage. In 5.7.2018 will be finish 2 years warranty. I would like to buy another 2 years warranty yet.
Please help me how can I check problems with 3rd if I drive a little and my drives are easy without elude enging on maximum.
I am worry to find misstake after warranty two years or 4 years. Track days with my car no possible. Can I simulate problem Or his attribute ?
What you recommenede me? Many thanks for help. My English is not technical sorry.
Aspect from save driving lost 3rd level during advance in hill is not safe, too. Is not impulse for Porsche on call action?

Hello Cila,

We have had about a dozen of the GT4 owners we work with have this 3rd gear failure occur, all 2016 build date cars. These third gear failures do not have a rhyme or reason to them, nor do they have any warning signs. We had one fail on a purely street driven car with less than 3k miles, and we had one fail with about 15k track miles on the car. Unfortunately you are simply at risk, and for your own benefit you should ignore the possibility of it happening as much as possible to maintain your driving experience for the 4 years of your warranty. If it does happen, Porsche has been very good at covering these under warranty in a timely manner without much fuss with few exceptions. I would expect that due to the amount of failures, Porsche will eventually extend the warranty on the transmission for this situation similar to how they did on the early 991.1 GT3 engines, but only time will tell. Let us say worst case scenario you have a third gear failure and it is out of warranty, and Porsche doesn't take responsibility. The third gear failing will essentially turn 3rd gear into neutral, but the remainder of the gears will function for you to drive it temporarily. Instead of replacing the whole transmission as Porsche might tell you, you might consider contacting a local Porsche transaxle specialist and instead have them replace the 3rd gear with Holinger's splined third gear to resolve the issue and get you back on the road again. I am quite confident this would be a much more inexpensive means of a repair rather than a complete replacement, yet just as good if not better.

Many thanks for answer. Can you appologize my English, please?
As I wrote all my life from my childhood I wanted to have Porsche car. On my old times I have. I am driving safetly but I like to fast drive when is possible. Especially in hills.
Driving with calculte to lost 3rd gear is not good when you sweep smaller car. But I can imagin.
What I can’t imagin is repair gear box along Porsche service. So I think that Porsche must adopt begin invoke action.
I read about this situation on forum randomly. I am happy that this forum exist and I found its. Sometimes I have problem to understand all but is very actual for me read your advice, experience.
Every are diffrent but all love cars :-)
I will wait on my two years guaranty on July 2018 as I wrote I will extend about two years more and I will drive sometimes.
Of coure carefully I will red this thread and all forums.
Regards
CiLA from Slovakia

Anyone have any thoughts on how Porsche will handle 3rd gear failures once the cars are out of warranty? Looking to buy next year so most cars will be nearing the end of warranty. Would an aftermarket warranty be worth while?

It wouldn't hurt to buy a car that has already had the tranny replaced. There are quite a few out there now (mine for one) and, for the 2016 build failure, once it's fixed, it's fixed for good. When a tranny fails, Porsche has a back to back warranty with Getrag (Porsche get paid for the labour too, so it's no skin off their noses). Getrag then rebuild the box as new (including a spankers LSD) with corrected parts and most will find the gearbox part No. has an X in it to signify remanufactured.

Was anyone able to convince your dealer to replace the 3rd gear with Holinger instead of just replacing the whole tranny when 3rd gear fails? I would doubt they would.

Below are the photos of the Porsche weak welded 3rd gear vs Holinger. (OEM photos from Sharkwerk Mule car vs Holinger 3rd gear)
Unless Porsche made that gear weak to prevent catastrophic failure to other drivetrain parts under high stress?

^ dealers are not allowed to open up the gearbox.
under warranty, they removed your bad box and put in the replacment sent by porsche
i BOUGHT a gearbox and opened my bad one.
and yes, 3rd is poorly welded as u show here.

You bought a tranny? That's nuts.
Sorry if I missed it, did you post a DIY on the 3rd gear replacement?

Can you annotate which is which? Maybe put an arrow to the weld in question? (sorry for my ignorance! )

Top photo is OEM. The dog ring gear is just welded. The failed version the welds were just partial. Noticed the weld cracked? That turns your 3rd gear into neutral.
Bottom photo is Holingen. The dog ring uses tooth and pinion.

I got confirmation from AutoQuest that the replacement tranny will have fully welded dog ring.
