I see. They are all supposed to be the same box, but I see what you are trying to figure out

I don't see the point in analysing the minutae. Porsche likely didn't know Getrag changed the manufacturing technique. We will likely never know when the change took place. There have been minor changes to these boxes over the years that are never referenced anywhere, like the change of ring gear bolts somewhere during the 987.2 production.

My original advice is still what I think. Drive the car. If it breaks make them fix it for you. Don't lose sleep.

I'm not trying to beat a dead horse. Just trying to confirm that there was a change it the 3rd gear construction. Welded VS splines /pined on the earlier 981 S box. Is that the case?
thanks carl

LOL, if I assume you mean the 991 connection rod fastener torque station assembly line................

I hope that this issue is not one more nail in the manual transmission coffin.

I repeat, we don't know when the change took place.

I'm not seeing welds in this photo either. Not a welding expert, but I know what a horseshoe looks like and I've stayed in a Holiday Inn Express before.

Can someone add a little markup to indicate the area where the welds in question are?

It doesn't look like a normal weld. It's an EB weld. Blow the picture up really big on your computer and look down in the crack between the gear and the dog.

Thanks GTgears for sharing your knowledge, it's very valuable

Sorry to get to know you this way but it's still a pleasure ;-)

Sorry if i seem slow on the uptake. One simple question.

It is confirmed that early 981S box's (not 987) had 3rd gears that were splined not welded and it is not known when the change took place?
yes or no?

Thank you

Matt is saying he doesn't know. If I'm reading correctly he said they are probably all welded, but he's not sure and if nobody's removing transmissions and taking them apart or having them fail we won't know. Since the gear ratios are the same I'd think they're the same... unless Porsche changed it at some point to save money, or one particular batch had bad welds etc. Matt says he doesn't know when this occurred and nobody knows at this point. The only exception might be the BASE Boxster which has a different 3rd gear.

Some more pics of gears. Not sure which gear this is (5th?) but I wanted to show that the synchro teeth on this gear DO NOT overhang like 3rd does:

I think this is 3rd gear - and the synchro teeth do overhang (which Matt suggested might make them more fragile):

re: Matt's quote earlier in this thread:
I think the reason it is happening on 3rd is because the synchro teeth overhang the gear. I think the synchro teeth is flexing and cracking the welds.
I'm not an expert on this stuff by any means but I'd think 3rd would also see more abuse for a lot of reasons.

Close-ups of the welds he's talking about (you can see them in the above pics - it's the dark ring around the inner part of the gear):

My original advice is still what I think. Drive the car. If it breaks make them fix it for you. Don't lose sleep.

And change to your gears when the warranty's up

Do NOT use their repair services. They destroy the temper on the gear and it shears in half as pictured.

Ah ok, got it, thanks! Between your response and Dan's photos, I see what we're dealing with now.

Great thread.
Everyones learning and sharing.
As long as Porsche throws parts under warranty at cars in a reasonable time frame, all is good.
Keep the car stock enough to not have to fight for warranty while the experts get ready to keep the cars on track with better improved parts for when the warranty runs out.
