I saw a 991 GT3 with the same failure. The GT3 had it happen on track by hitting a sharp burm head-on.

The part is a casting, not stamped metal, can't tell if it's aluminum or magnesium. Magnesium is quite a bit more brittle for impact strength. I'm guessing it's aluminum, but that's only a guess. |
crazy, so how can this be prevented

This may give a clue

the dip off outside of T6 is not THAT bad. if that caused such failure all the time....
T6 at LS T8 at TH the first left turn at the new course of TH and the really fast guys will drop 1-2 wheels into dirt to make track wider. |
Who's going to make a strut plate or ....? it look's like there's something for the aftermarket comm. to make. hmmmm
All jokes a side I am sorry this happen I wonder if it can be fix properly. |
I got tagged a bunch on this one.

Wow, that metal looks thick. Must have been a severe impact. It does not seem to have torn loose, more like a clean sever. This has to be one of the strongest points on the car. I know Porsche Germany will want to see this up close.
When I met with AP in Weissach, one of my questions for him was how is it that Porsche is able to make their cars with such lightweight parts and yet they seem to hold together so well on the track? His response was a lot of engineering. We'll my guess is that at some point, lightweight materials reach their limit and will fail. |
Photo was taken at a Northern California Porsche dealership. Damage was apparently done on a curb at Thunderhill.
Someone on FB who appears to do relevant work for Porsche suggested it must be a perfect storm/freak occurrence, noting this is the same damper mount structure used in the GT3 Cup/991 RSR and is thus capable of dealing with crazy loads. Apparently, it is separately replaceable if the rest of the frame is not bent. Watching with curiosity to see where this goes. Suspect a lot of misinformation may result from this image in the hands of those who didn't take the photo and don't know about the type of incident, but it may be good that it's out there if there is indeed an inherent weakness. My gut is it had to be an extremely hard hit or a hidden defect, or both. |
Knowing this board I bet 100$ some are out in their garage right now checking their strut tower for cracks. :roflmao:
