1st to 2nd gear grind update
My grind going 1-2 at about 5k rpm has become a bit more frequent, occurring 1-2 times a day. I took it in, and the dealer drained the tranny fluid for analysis. Maybe a bit more clutch wear appearance at a macro view, but they're going to have an expert look at it next week. So far, no grinds driving home. The differential diagnosis could include a bad clutch that isn't disengaging or a bad synchro. I'll keep you updated. The head of services was excellent in going over his thoughts and plan with me.

Granny shifting, not double-clutching like you should
(which actually would get rid of syncro grinds)

The analysis of the fluid was normal. The specialist thought it was break in, but I'm at 2600km. I didn't notice it for 1.5 days of driving, but I've had to park it until I return back in a couple of weeks from Toronto.

I had a few 1-2 grinds too, all at high RPM (around 7000) but when not at full throttle. I had my oil analyzed, and it was fine, with a bit extra copper that they thought was acceptable and is probably from the syncros. It hasn't shown itself in the last 500+ miles, but the final few millimeters going into 2nd just isn't that smooth at times for me. I'd be interested to see what is discovered in your case.

Ditto I had the grind especially when cold between 1st and 2nd and even when warm at high rpms. I didn't really pay attention to keeping revs low etc or break in periods. But it sorted itself out in less than 500 miles. I exercise the engine with varying rpm loads once the temps for the oil are above 190F. I never red line it nor do I floor it or put excessive engine load and am super smooth with my inputs. Grinding gone and gearbox is like butter!!! My car is at 1700 miles on the clock.

I only get a slight grind between 1 and 2nd on cold engine. After she warms up not an issue. But I even remember on my 991 GT3 that when engine was cold the PDK-S was sluggish and had slight hesitation between 1 and 2nd also

cross-posting from 987/981 sub-forum - no one seems to care about gear grinds over there!

i took the spyder out for a long drive today.... heavenly, now that i'm able to take that sweet 3.8 up to redline. oh my god!!!
i had noticed the 1-2 gear grind on a few occasions previously. i had thought it was user error, since i get the same grind intermittently on my s2000. but with all the postings on it being a porsche problem i was beginning to believe it was.
the grind occurred a few of times today. the second time i was very mindful of my shift. i think it happens when i'm either shifting into second coming out of a turn or when not pulling the shifter. the centripetal force of turning and acceleration at a relatively low speed seems to fool my hand muscle memory into thinking i've applied enough force to execute a successful second gear shift. as a result, my clutch foot starts to let up on the pedal prematurely.
once i figured this out, i was extra aware when making the second gear shift and could feel when it was about to grind, but by applying a little extra force to the shift **** (to complete the second gear shift) i was able to avoid the grind.
i had always thought the s2000 grind was the fault of the tranny. it happened on all three of my s2k's - two MY2000s and a MY2003. it wasn't until i experienced it on the spyder that i suspected it was user error. the failure modes on the s2k was very similar - first to second gear shifts accelerating out of a turn and sometimes on slow acceleration.
again i think its a premature clutch release thats the culprit in these two cases.
embarrassing that ii might be the failure point, but pretty sure this is the case.
my theory anyway. thoughts?
