Of course the responses were expected.....you can see now why the 911 is still the only Porsche that matters.

Data:
-Andy Lally fast lap in a friends .2RS with R7s, after having driven 2 other RSs that weekend, and 100+ laps at TWS that weekend, a track that he been to before. Cold day, excellent weather for tires and power. ~50F. He got the same time in my .2RS at the same event. As did another semi-pro driver.
-One of my fast laps in an RS, faster than Andy's on Pirelli DH, in late spring, ~80F
- Recent good lap in the GT4 on R7s, ~70F, about the same time as my RS lap, and faster than Andy's.

Opinions:
- [Insert renn member's name]: The 997.1 GT3 is faster, because i saw someone driving a GT4 once, I was faster....
- [Insert renn member's name]: Unless it's me, I don't believe it
- [Insert renn member's name]: Unless it's a pro driver on the same day, same cup of coffee, and right after a bathroom break....

GT3 Driver: My tires were on HC 35, with the engine running on 5 cylinders when the GT4 passed me...

This is why, if I had the time, I would go club racing. No excuses, no BS, just race. I have a 997.1 GT3, and once I get a few more miles in the GT4, and take it to the track, I will be happy to share my lap times. I have a feeling that I will be faster in the GT4.

Keep these threads up. If most GT3 owners just care about lap times maybe I'll finally be able to afford a used 997.2 when those guys stop paying crazy prices for them in favor of 991.2 GT3 manuals. (One can hope I'm also working on plan B which is to just come up with more $$$)

I heard Porsche did extensive testing with the GT4 benchmarked against the 997 GT3/RS on all the major tracks to ensure that it wasn't faster on any of them, hence why they detuned the GT4 to 385 HP.

Curious, where did you hear that?

From what fabspeed and Cobb show I'd say the gt4 is underrated on paper to make the GT3 guys feel better.

With an extra 40-50 hp, the GT4 would be an absolute monster and probably keep up with the 991 GT3.

Yup. That's why I'm thinking about doing the GT450 package on my Spyder, albeit with Sports headers instead of the race versions. 70-80 hp gain for around $8K.

We've had track events with both a .2 RS and a GT4. The GT4 was at least 2 seconds faster. I am not a fast driver at all, and I was faster than the .2 RS by 0.5 seconds. The RS driver is better than I am.

One thing I am having a hard time understanding is why most people - mainly the guys who own 911's - say that it is easier to go fast in a Cayman or that it masks driver mistakes.
I have owned more 911's than mid engined Porsches and I dont think that one is more difficult than the other - just different.(I am not talking about older 911's here. I cant say too much on that without experience pushing any pre-996 911 on track or to even close to the limit.) If you are truly fast in a 911, you will be fast in a Cayman and vice versa.
So take the guy who posted his laps - ShakeNBake - he is fast in both GT3 and GT4 and obviously doesn't have a reason to say one is better than the other. They are both very capable cars in the right hands. Each is different and I personally cant say that I really like one over the other - despite owning many GT3's and Boxster/Caymans. My favorite car to date was my 987 Spyder. But the 997.1RS and the GT4 are very close to being right there with it. That is just driving enjoyment - not absolute speed.
As for lap times, the Spyder was obviously slower, but it was just so much fun to drive.
And the lap times I have experienced with 996 GT3, 997.1 GT3, 997.1 RS, GT4 at VIR are all fairly close. The GT3's I did 2:05's with - all within a second of each other on Hoosiers. Of course I did have the 996 suspension modded but I was also was a less experienced driver then. That was also before they repaved the track. I have been told that the repave was worth 1.5 seconds. That would make sense since my best lap in the GT4 on Hoosiers was 2:03.1 just the other week. I am pretty confident that the GT4 and the GT3's prior to the 991 are all fairly close. I do think the GT4 is slightly faster than the 997.1 - maybe a 1 second or less difference - but I would guess its on par with the 997.2. We aren't talking a HUGE gap though. I have no reason to favor one over the other as I have no bet in this. That is from my own experience with these cars. Granted I have not driven a 997.2 RS or 991 GT3 so I cant comment on comparisons there with certainty. But the guy who has both cars doesn't need to guess - he has experienced it! And anyone that has a problem with the evidence is just blind. Cars have progressed. Isn't it natural to expect that newer generation of "lesser" cars will be as fast or faster than prior "top end" cars??
