1. Mercedes AMG GT-S, 1:35.57
2. Porsche Cayman GT4, 1:37.43 **
3. Mazda MX-5 Miata, 1:50.68
4. Mercedes AMG C63S, 1:40.50
5. Bentley Continental GT3-R, 1:43.51
6. Cadillac CTS-V, 1:38.52
7. Cadillac ATS-V (M6), 1:40.18 (A8, 1:39.65)
8. Lexus RC-F, 1:43.20
9. Volkswagen Golf R, 1:46.95
*DNF Chevrolet Corvette Z06/Z06 (M7), 1:38.60
* Next day, GM sent a red Z06 to replace the yellow one where it competed in the remaining tests ( 0-60, 1/4, etc.). Too bad they didn't have the backup car when the LS laps were being done.
** The Porsche also had suspension-related issues. Techs had to fix the problems onsite.

Here are some comparisons times in the past with other Porsches. For the OP, I guess the references show you will be faster on the track for less $$ with a GT4 vs 991s. Unless it's HP dependent high speed tracks.
2011 GT3 RS 1:36.77
2016 GT4 1:37.43
2013 Carrera 4s both PDK was 1:39.00 and 1:39.19
2012 Carrera S (991) PDK 1:39.3
2007 GT3 1:39.57
2014 Cayman S PDK 1:41.26
2012 Cayman R PDK 1:41.64
2008 911 Turbo 1:42.51

The GT4 at the M/T BDC event suffered horrible understeer.... even after alignment, it still didn't improve much. Hence M/T classed it 2nd place. They really loved the dialed-down handling of the AMG GT-S. Ashame the Z06 was a DNF... it probably would have been the winner if w/o issues.

Interesting notes about the car that they tested, which seem to be in line with what others have reported (Nur93 and Petevb) but a step beyond.
Perhaps being a press car, running tire pressures too high and/or being 'broken' led them to encounter high levels understeer beyond the car's normal tenancies. I also wonder what fixes they went through to remedy the problem and if those fixes were inline with what some members have already identified on the board (lower tire pressures, camber adjustment, sway bar adjustment). Despite this it put up a very respectable time compared to the field and previous years.
As a strict 991S to GT4 comparison, the tires would be an advantage going to the GT4, however PDK would about equal things out. We are also not sure the condition of the tires on any of the cars - worn, new or otherwise.

Oh, I somehow missed that you're comparing it to a performance-optioned 911S. Yeah, once you add PDK and whatnot, the S will almost certainly be able to hang with the GT4. But of course, as you mentioned, by that point, you have widened the price gap pretty significantly.
I certainly wouldn't mind owning a GT4 (or a GTS) but I simply need a rear seat for the little ones. Our has PDCC/7MT/18-ways, and it is a screamer. From other cars I have been around, I like the GT4 exhaust over our PSE.

but since it did come back, I'll give my 2 cents.
I had a 2012 991S with PDK. Kind of felt like a regular old car to me. I bought it over a new 2015 Cayman S because I thought it was a better resale bargain, since depreciation had already taken a chunk (both cars were the identical negotiated price).
I traded it in a year later for a 13 991S with manual. I really liked the car a lot, tracked it one time.
In december, I decided to thin the garage a little, so I traded in my M4 and 991 on a GT4, and the 4 brings a smile to my face like no other car ever has. I totally love the car, where I only liked the 991s.

Maybe on larger tracks they are comparable but on smaller tracks i'm guessing the GT4 will win agianst the 991s. In that motor trend test the GT4 is already faster than the Ferrari 458, Corvette ZR1, and the R8 V10 plus on the streets of willow. I doubt the 991s is faster especially if it's manual vs manual.
