Good points about weight distribution difference relative to the M3, that totally slipped my mind in my morning stupor.

And as long as we're setting the bar at perfect world, ideally these new gears would come with a way to have one's ECU reprogrammed so that auto-blip continues to match revs properly at the track.

Or cost constraints. I got a lot of people riled up before when I called this a parts bin car, but that's a 100% true statement on the gearbox. They changed the displacement and the manners of the engine but use the exact same gearbox in S. That doesn't suggest there was a whole lot of German engineering involved in the decision.

From reading the comments, I think most people would be happy right around 67.5 mph BTW, this represents over 21% lower gearing than stock 82 mph - an enormous difference.

BTW, there was one guy who voted for 50mph - that is basically the current 1st gear ratio and even I'm not that hardcore...

But they took the full intake, throttle body and exhaust from the 3.4L Boxster engine... It is a parts bin car. Nothing wrong with that in general if you've got this parts bin.

That said, I don't believe leaving the gearbox alone was based on cost. They have some perfectly good lower ratio gears from the base Cayman they could have used and they chose not to. The question is why... see above.

The only upside to the tall gearing is that on a really tight road the 47 mph first gear becomes active, and with the blip shift to rev match it's actually really easy to throw it into. Then you can really slide it around... Takes a little getting used to though.

Yeah, I was going to play around with various techniques and see if it might be possible and kind to the hardware to double-clutch downshift into first with a combination of manual and auto-blipping (auto blipping doesn't work when the clutch isn't pressed, afaik). I would guess a modern gearbox would still appreciate double clutching into 1st or is that wasted effort?

I would definitely double-clutch if I were downshifting into 1st. I doubt not doing it would break a modern gearbox, but that's a large ratio gap, so I'd be inclined to give the synchros all the help I could there. And yes, auto-blip can't work while you're in Neutral with the clutch out (which you have to be to double-clutch) because the car has no way to know what gear you're planning to shift into next.
