Considering a GT4. Is the tall gearing as disappointing as the reviews make it out?

Going from a short ratio high torque Audi TTRS to the GT4 has given me nothing but smiles. Plenty of shifting to do on the street (albeit not redlining past second gear because of speed limits) has proven to be quite the fun ride. I can’t wait to try it out on track. Test drive one for yourself and you’ll be delighted.

About the only thing some guys bitch about, it is largely a non issue in an otherwise great car. I have owned 356, 930, C4S, lambo Gallardo, Shelby GT 350, and this thing is a rock solid marvel.......hands down.

Here you go... 24 pages on gear ratios in the GT4. I think this thread covers a lot of territory.

IMO, everybody drives a car differently and in different places. Many guys tool around at low rpms and so long 2nd and 3rd may not be an issue. Others like it torquey on back roads and might feel differently. Some folks might like driving around at 6000 rpms with the motor howling, others find it a bit obnoxious.
Every Porsche I have ever owned. ( water cooled) is pretty much a 1st. 2nd 3rd, 6th car.

Install a set of Dundon headers and their tune. No issues with tall gearing.👍

i'd say yes it is, specially for rally or driving on roads with hairpins etc. on the track its not too bad, depending on the track it can be good. however i'm over my GT4 bogging down in second gear pulling out of a tight corner.
whats happened to the new second gear?

I have limited track experience but haven't found it an issue at all for a fast track like Spa (whcih I think it was designed for) but imagine it is not optimal for AutoCross or Sprints; I am having a go at a hill climb on Saturday and imagine I would like the gearing shorter to maximise acceleration.. I do dislike the soft spot mid way through the power band and will, one day, fit a set of headers and tune to get rid of this.
I wonder what the reviewers would think of the car with a set of Dundon headers and intake mods and 425-30HP with smoother torque curve. Maybe fewer comments?

Its not even close to an issue for me.
The more hours I spend with the GT4, the more I've come to a realization that it's as close to perfect out of the box as any car I've owned.
When I first got it I was thinking of getting either Dundon or Soul headers , Tarrett's rear link kit, etc...but I've decided to keep it 100% pure for now as it has more than enough power and Jeez Louise does it sound good .
FWIW- A Carmine GT4 showed up at my local BMW dealership. California car, 1 Owner, Sport Chrono , black satin 20's but sofas. 5000 miles. Listed for $95K.

Advanced
I once had a guy ask me at a track about the understeer tendencies of the car: "I've heard your car understeers like crazy. That must be a pain..." My response was that I just change my driving style to suit, by trail braking more than I would in a tail happy car.
The gearing is about the same type of issue. If you're the type of person that can only drive a car that requires 4th gear by 100 MPH, then you should go buy that car. You can also adapt your driving style to the gearing, or go get your car modified as others have mentioned.
No car is perfect, but I REALLY love my GT4.

Three Wheelin'
Add more power and then gearing is fine
Honestly, gearing was my biggest complaint when I first got the car but three years and 90hp later it doesn't bother me. Part of it is appreciating the times where the long 2nd gear is useful and part of it is just getting used to the idea chasing redline on the street just isn't going to be a thing 99% of the time (no different than a GT3 IMHO). I'm still going to pursue a shorter gear stack but it's not a must do like I felt it was initially to enjoy the car..
