The 3.8L probably hits a sweet spot in terms of power and weight...and weight my friend is a powerful weapon in racing.
Then when we jump to the consumer/street side you have a nice lineup of GT cars with no overlapping of market or price.

Thanks CJ. Looks pretty straightforward to me. 3.8 manual at launch with detail revisions to engine over 981 version and improved HP (+40,+5lbft). Stiffer chassis, revised suspension and pick up points, aero tweaks etc. Later RS version PDK gearbox (similar marketing plan as 991.2 GTX), no dount enhanced aero and further chassis hardware changes.
Only question for me is MT gear ratios. Hopefully a tigher 2,3,4 than the 981 GT4 box...
Appreciate you candor and insight

We’ve missed you on the 991 GT board!

I would say any change to the ratios is highly unlikely. The new car has 40hp more (so, logically Vmax would be a bit higher). Lowering the ratios (or packing them closer together) would not be consistent with a higher top speed and very similar power/torque curve and redline as the previous motor.

This whole thing makes no sense to me.
1. Porsche doesn't have a warehouse of 9A1 engines sitting around somewhere from like 3 years ago, right? They are going to make all new 3.8L X51 engines just for the GT4 (and Spyder)? It's my understanding that the 9A1 won't fit in the 992 because of the new location of the engine mounts and they aren't going to put it in the regular 718s. In other words, they can't use it in a 992 T and they won't use it in a Boxster GTS, right? So this would have to be the swansong for the 9A1. They are bringing it back just for this? Makes no sense to me. I mean, they are clearly doing it, I'm just confused.
2. Way back in 2016, Porsche made the 2.7, 3.6, and 3.8 which were almost the same engines (except displacement) that went in everything from a base Boxster all the way to a 991.1 GTS. Now, just the 718s get 3 standalone engines (2.0, 2.5, and 3.8) that are found in no other vehicles. Way to complicate the hell out of things!
3. Does anyone know if a GT4RS can be made? Will the 4.0 from the GT3 actually fit in a 718? Just in case I want to dream.

They do have to keep parts for warranty purposes, and for engines, crate engines are the norm. Not a warehouse full, but they are there. That engine is also relatively cheap to make.
GT4 is a Motorsport GT car, and those always have a different engine than the regular range.
When there is a will, and depends on which department you ask, something also fits into another.
