Service tech found metal shavings in oil filter - 2500 mi car
Just got a text message from my SA and apparently there are metal shavings in my GT4 which has only 2500 miles. The oil had been changed 10 months ago at 1500 miles. The car exhibits a rpm related loud ticking noise which is why I brought the car in. I have also not tracked or pushed the car ever.
Now my friend who is a master tech at McLaren has told me that when metal shavings are present, the whole engine is replaced. The field technician will be out to handle the issue and my friend said when he comes out at his dealership it's probably authorize an engine replacement. I do not like the idea of having a replacement engine in a car with such low miles. If Porsche indeed does replace the engine, would it be too much for me to ask for them to give me an extended warranty on the drivetrain? The engine really shouldn't have had any problems being only 2500mi old.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to approach this matter? I'm pretty bummed about this.

Ya, that sucks. But it is a machine and sometimes things go wrong.
How much do you drive and how long do you expect to own the car? Will an extended warranty provide you any value?

This would have to be the 1st of this engine type that I've heard that needs replacing, they're proven to be bullet proof in Carrera S and GT4's.
Sorry to hear this, hope it all gets sorted quickly. What happens with the engine numbers, will they be new numbers ?

I have seen metal shavings in my bikes for the first few oil changes. But then they do disappear after that. I am not sure but isn't it something similar for cars as well?

I would much rather have a new engine as opposed to having the current one torn down for repair.
let us know how it goes.

I had a similar issue with ticking noise. They found shavings as well.
It turned out to be a failing crank bearing. They have opened and replaced that. They sent a video to Porsche and they replied as open the engine.
Made another 1000 km.
No problems or ticking noise yet.

This 9A1 motor is in the 997.2, and the entire 991 S range from 2012.5-2016. Some go "boom". Maybe this one too. There have been a few noted here on Rennlist. Not many. But certainly more than 1.

I wouldn't think dealer tech would get the field techs involved if there was just a barely detectable amount of metal shaving.
also, they didn't keep a sample of the oil so the anaysis no Blackstone lab analysis. In the event of a rod bearing replacement, would the shavings have done any damage to the other parts of the engine?

They have measured the bores, pistons, camshaft etc.
shavings was captured by the filter.

I do my own maintenance and always cut open the oil filters, its a common practice on all aircraft maintenance. There are always some fine metallic shavings in the filters much of it comes from the machining of the inside of the block. The test is to take a magnet over the shavings you don't want them magnetic .Over time and mutable oil changes there are less and less but always some .To bad the tech didn't send a picture. It would be interesting to see if he cut the filter open or just looked at the bottom of the canister. The smart money says he didn't cut it open. carl

Mine was cut and they have showed me the filter as well. It was quite shiny and you see the shavings.

I intend in keeping the car a long time. So anyone have any experience in pushing porsche giving an extended warranty on major work done to the engine? or maybe point me to threads that could be of use?

You’ll get 2 years on the motor. What’s your in service date. But talk to the dealer. Honestly. Doubt it.
