I personally have a soft spot for Subarus.. My first car when I got my license was the family *******' wagon... 91' Legacy Turbo wagon.. I snatched it from my non-driving Asian mother

It's different. Called the "NBR Special". They rebuilt/tuned it specifically for the NBR run. Prodrive made both. It was a nuts lap. Pretty much the only STi remaining of that car is the body.

I bet. I have an N12... And it does not take long to stray from STi parts.

I'm sold that the video is an 3.0T from the 991.2... For me it is clear at the 4:21 mark... Not under braking at all...and you can hear that snail sound that I hear on my STi when the exhaust is restricted for noise levels.

Maybe the conspiracy theorist in me, but during Smokies a Porsche NA engineer gave a presentation on the development of the 4.0L and how after development, it trickled down from RSR race car to GT3. The presentation stated that it will continue to be used in several platforms including several future race cars (GT3R)... the GT4 CS wasn’t on the list.

I’m guessing you haven’t heard a 718S live yet...

I can't believe there is still people in the turbo camp. You guys need to play the GT2 Cup/R video before and after listening to this GT4 Clubsport. We can't be expecting the same sound as the GT3 from a de-tuned, restricted motor. I think it sounds good but not spectacular.

Riddle me this though. Why would it sound worse than the 981, when the 4l sounds amazing in the GT3? That’s what I can’t understand. And why doesn’t it rev out even remotely like the .2 GT3? It sounds entirely different, not just in terms of exhaust note but also how slowly it builds revs and the shift points. Would a particulate filter change its character that much?

Some combination of the PF and the noise regulations coupled with detuning is doing it. There are times when it sounds like a screamer. There are others when it doesn't. There was probably a reason why they were short shifting and not wringing it out completely. However, if you have the GT4 followed by a true race car (RSR/R/Whatever), it's going to sound more exaggerated and different. I'm not denying that it doesn't sound like the 981 at higher revs. We also didn't hear the true high revs from multiple angles.

I don't think it's fair to compare it to a GT3. The 981 didn't sound like the 991.1 GT3. Similar, but still different. I mean, I can look up a video of a 981 Spyder doing it's rounds on the Nurburgring and there are times when it sounds bassy and not like a screamer.

or this:

I still think from the right angle, the 718 spyder/CS you get a hint of the wail. Here's a good angle of the CS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJJv...=youtu.be&t=65

Compare that to here, which is that supposed N/A (to me, it's hard to tell. doesn't rev as freely) but camo'd car based on the muffler being 100% from an N/A car:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJJv...youtu.be&t=424

If that car is N/A as has been postulated, then that could very well be what the new standards do to a car.

The motor in the 981 GT4 and the 991.1 GT3 were very different in construction and design. This motor doesn’t sound like any Porsche I’ve ever heard, nor does it sound good. Just makes me even more curious what’s in there.

Porsche needs to make this car meaningfully reduced from the 911 GT3. You really can't expect 9k rev limiter and the same induction. I won't begin to speculate what internals will be changed as well. My guess is regulations and yes the filter make the difference as well.

It sure sounds like it's revving enough to be NA but nobody has explained to me that absolute off throttle turbo whistle it's making...

Can you tell us what time in the video you hear this ??

The whistle that we hear off throttle and under braking is really the brakes. If you're hearing this elsewhere, do point me to it.
