if you want to discuss third gear failures, there is a long thread on it already, which is stickied.

So many apocalypytic fear mongering, tire kicking drama queens.
People looking for a reason to stand on a soapbox and proclaim why they won’t buy a car will always find one. I’m just not sure why they’re kicking around in here?

Three Wheelin'
BMW M engines had timing chain guide failures (kaboom), bearing issues (kaboom), vanos issues (almost kaboom), rear subframe failures, strut mount failures, it goes on. Come to Porsche and the 997 GT3 seems to be reliable-ish but needs constant (expensive) maintenance and the 991.1 had the cam/finger follower issues. The new 991.2 GT3 engine is running solid lifters with no adjustment schedule (BMW called for a valve adjustment ever 15k miles), 2 ring pistons, no options for a lwfw presumably cause there are vibration/dampening issues (maybe due to the hollow crank?) all of which sound cool and very race car. They may be totally fine long term, I guess we'll see, but on the surface they don't sound good as far as long term durability.
All things considered, the GT4 third gear issue doesn't bother me and I'm thrilled to have an engine that doesn't have any real catastrophic design faults. An evolution of the existing 3.8 (tuned and/or stroked to 4l) in the 718 GT4 sounds great, at least you can bet it'll be reliable.

Not really, for example I have my name down on a 718GT4, concurrently own two other largely problem free Porsches and a 720S - also problem free (the latter purchased in preference to a GT3 because at the time it was anyones guess with Porsche).
The fact remains cars built in 2015 AND 2016 have reported failures and some have had repeated failures - so when the 718GT4 comes out - I will be asking about the third gear and I will be expecting a clear answer.

You've made it clear how you feel, we get it.
You're not doing yourself any favours
Now give it a rest already!! .

You mean PORSCHE aren't doing anyone any favours.......................take it up with them. I most certainly will be. Keep in mind in Aus the next GT4 will be 240k.........

Replacing a gear box does not equal the cost of two tires - Porsche replaces the whole gear box (in fact the gear box is not new but refurbished) not just the cog - there are good reasons for this.
Please feel free to list the reasons why there are so many GT4s on the Australian market and why so few are selling. Likewise why there are so many 991.1 GT3s on the market.
I live in Australia and won't go near a 981GT4 or 991.1GT3 - I have seen far to many problems with both. I am directly aware of 3 GT4 failures and a fourth in dispute plus two 991.1 GT3 failures.
I note how slippery the dealers are too.......

I'm not lecturing anyone and I ended up with a Mclaren because the 991.1 GT3 was so problematical and watched in awe as dealers and Porsche ducked and dived. Thats what happens, people chose other products in those circumstances and I'm very happy I did they even fly an engineer over to service it and their honest. None of the dissembling you get from Porsche.
However, I wont use that car for motorsport - far too special for that. hence my interest in the 718GT4 (so long as it doesn't have the same gearbox).

Has there ever been a precedent that a replacement for a Porsche model went up by such a huge amount for a facelift? List price in Aus for the 981 was $189,900. Now $240k ?

A 718 GTS (with no tweaking) is 200k, that means the 718 GT4 will be around 230k-240k minimum. (992 base ~270k)
