Ahem.. I think it will be a v8.. and I can point to a million reasons inside my head why this is probable.
Doesn't fit is relative. I can work at Porsche today and say the 6cyl turbo doesn't fit in the 718 chassis today. Or whenever that was stated. That's true. Does the 6cyl turbo fit in the 718 GT4? Maybe. Truth is no one knows. People forget the GT4 isn't exactly the same as the 981 GTS chassis for instance. I think the Chris harris video he explains why / where they changed the body in white.

I think the 3.0 turbo is the least likely option... it would make the GT4 probably faster then the current GT3. I think if they’re going turbo, it’s the turbo 4. I can use the same argument many use for the 4.0. Porsche spent money on developing that engine, so why not use it. Conversely, If they’re going NA, I bet it will be the 3.8 or 4.0.

Walliser, VP of Motorsport and GT cars just stated in an interview to Drive magazine that they will continue to make naturally aspirated engines for as long as possible because they add uniqueness to their cars.

He also stated that the NA & manual transmission combo is a popular setup and 50% of the GT3 sales in the US were with manual transmissions.

This is definitely good news for the next GT3 and maybe even the GT4. Here’s the link to the article:

I hope the NA is true. I also hope my begging at the dealer for a 718 GT4 build slot paid off in that case.

How is a 4 cylinder engine going to compete in GT4 category even with BOP? Against Mercedes or Mclaren turbo v8’s and others in the class? I wouldn’t buy into that series with a 2.5 4 car. I’d have to buy a super vacuum space toilet to flush all the money.

8500+rpm NA flat 6 pls. Don't care all that much about power output, as long as the gearing is improved...

Multiple ways to interpret the content. Could be used to support the viewpoint of NA or Turbo going forward...

I’m beginning to wonder why we haven’t heard any sound clips.

also, no GT4 Nurburgring trips...too much attention potentially? A lap there would answer lots of questions.

+1

Here is what is stated in the article instead of the rephrased version above:

Walliser said Porsche plans to hang on to naturally aspirated engines for as long as emission laws and regulations would allow it.

I just drove my friend’s GT3.2 manual. The gearing is tall... I saw 88mph or so in 2nd gear. Nobody is complaining about it though.

The speed in gears is very similar between GT3 and GT4 (don't think 2nd goes to 88). However, the GT3 is revving at 9k and the GT4 is revving at 7800 (over 15% difference), so the difference in absolute gearing is very significant. GT3 feels much better geared...

The GT3 also goes 198 mph, so that somewhat constrains how low the gearing can be.

The complaints about tall gearing for the GT4 is well documented, I don't think we have to reopen that discussion. I do think it's subjective and depends on driving style. Here in the Bay Area it definitely leaves me wanting because you're mostly in 3rd gear in a lot of tracks at the lower rpms which don't have anywhere near peak power.
