Slightly OT John, but would a 911R 'box fit a 981?

It would bolt up to the engine but we prob wouldn’t ever get the axles to line up. Why do you ask? Gearing reasons? That 911R box is pretty beefy too. I think we would have all sorts of space issues.

Yeah. Since everyone wants shorter ratios and now there are options to upgrade/reinforce the GT4 transmission it crossed my mind. Changing half the cogs (Sharkwerks style) seems like it actually sucks worse than stock IMO. Not sure what the cost is to rebuild the 981 'box **** to toes is, wondered if the 911R box might be a better choice at that point since theoretically it could bolt up to a 9A1 style block..

The 911R box by itself is rather expensive; it’s almost $20K but don’t hold me to that without letting me check my notes.

If it were me, I would go to one of the few reputable junkyards and buy a low mileage 981.1 gearbox with the shorter 1-2-3. I’d buy a lightweight clutch like I put on my GT4; I’d take the Guard Transmission shorter gears that we developed during the 2013 racing season and I’d make myself my own short ratio box and set the stock parts aside. You’d be amazed how cheaply this can be done when you consider you can get a good, used near bulletproof early 981 box for $3500.

I actually have a trans like this in our shop with the additional 4.12 R&P but I won’t sell it to anyone because the experimental R&P had a shelf life of about 15 hours on track. If I can find a stock R&P I’m going to rebuild the box one day.

I’ve always felt that the right power mods address the power drop that occurs well before the redline but this would give you a much cheaper project cost than a 911R box.

In addition, I don’t know anyone who has raced a 991.1 ZF made 7-spd manual so who knows what the long term track record is like. I’m sure it’s fine.

I will be the first to admit that I did not foresee the transmission problems the GT4 has experienced but Porsche will stand by it as they always try and do.

With all parts in hand I could have this package ready to go in a week’s time, ready to ship.

Wow, thanks for the lesson John! Lots of good info there to chew on. I like the factory spacing - having done ED, the stock gearing makes total sense on proper roads. Didn't know the 911R box was so much more than your Frankenbox. But I agree on spending the money on power mods instead, the factory flat spots amplify the need for shorter ratios. Haven't ridden in a 4.0 car but I both do and do not want to yet!!

Presumably a 991 series gearbox in a 981 would give 7 reverse gears and one forward, fun but not practical.

I think John's reuse and modification of a 981 PDK box is reassuring for those of us with PDK boxes as there are more PDK cars crashed and dismantled than PDK failures.

Here is a write-up of it. It has all Stage I GT4 power mods and big brakes. It was a daily commuter for a customer in the pacific NW.

While it would be hard to recreate that thing for the asking price of $69K, we can always do it all over again! At this point we could turn a 981 into a Clubsport with ease. We have learned a lot over the years!

This project will be complete in about 3 weeks. The car is being upgraded to race duty and just received a full 2016 IMSA spec 1.75" * .95" DOM steel roll cage and is now actually in the middle of getting air jacks at the moment. Then it will head to paint. When it returns, we install the fire system, safety nets, kill switches and prep it for race duty.

This was a car that started life as a flood recovery car and it ran a year of Driver's Ed duty with the Stage 1 bits (Cobb flash, IPD plenum, Cargraphic race headers & lightweight clutch. Given the high demand for PDK in the GT4 street car and the push for existing 981 owners to move their existing GT4s we have come up with a more economical package to retrofit PDK in the 981 GT4 street car with the hopes that others will follow suit. No more need to find a wrecked PDK car and rob wiring harnesses and control units as we have come up with a turn-key alternative. While the Clubsport is a way to have PDK in a GT4, it can't be driven to/from the track. This car however can.

Stay tuned!
