Default Over-axle vs Under-axle exhaust

Any thoughts on pros and cons of either as it relates to performance, sound, heat, etc?

I don’t spend much time under the car but I would think an under axle exhaust would scrape on the ground… The current owner of my last cayman broke the exhaust canister over a pothole or bump which sits higher than the axle.

Edit: I stand corrected! I honestly didn't think there was enough room there between the suspension bits.

Under-axle runs above the control arms, so scraping shouldn’t be an issue. I’m pretty sure the stock exhaust on a 718 GT4 is under-axle (not sure about stock 981).

I gather that with over-axle the consideration is heat around the dampers (can be addressed with thermal-insulating wrap), and with under-axle it’s size of pipes relative to the available space. I’m not sure how sound or performance are impacted.

Stock 718 GT4 and 981 GT4 both run over the axle. Same for the prior gen 987 and 986s as well. The is zero room between the control arm and the axle for exhaust; cant imagine trying to fit an exhaust thru there.

I have a fvd Brombacher full catless race exhaust with under-axle pipes installed on my GT4. I've been very pleased with it and haven't had any clearance or scraping issues. I'm not sure about the performance benefits of the over versus under-axle pipe, however, it would make sense that the shorter and straighter under-axle pipe would provide performance benefits. I have been very pleased with the overall power gains of the full system and, after about a year of use, I installed a Softronic tune which provided an additional, very noticeable power bump.

Man I would not want to work on that car. Looks like you could barely get the control arm shims out
