Orthojoe's GT4 track thread and ramblings

Here's a pic I just made. It tucks in nicely, and has no impact
on visibility. I didn't actually strap it down here, just put it in the
car to illustrate.
The bag doesn't leak. I've driven home from the track with it back
there and never had a problem. When you are plugging in, little
spurts of water can drop out of the connectors, but I do that
with the hose outside the door, and it's a tiny amount. If you
do it right, there's no leakage at all.
The cool shirt I got from Traq Gear doesn't have tubes over the
shoulder so there's no impingement from the HANS device.
There's no issue using it with a harness. The tubes meet the
shirt near the hip and it's easy to arrange so there
no tangle or issue with the belts or the seat.

Searching around, I've seen some threads on a "poor man's" version of this system that uses a therapeutic cooler instead. For example, you can get a 5.5 qt cooler with pump and ~6 ft of lines (DonJoy Iceman Clear3 unit) for $139 (!!). And the fittings are supposedly compatible with the shirts from Traq Gear and other places.

i have ALL the hi end stuff for this application and guess what, they work 50% of the time on a good day. the rest of the time you are cussing while driving.
so YUo need to make a better one since u are the RL mcgyver. you need a GIANT pump. and HIGH pressure too. 1/2 the time the fluid doesn't circulate. also use BIG HUGE GIANT ice box. b/c the ice melts faster than you think. and having to refill every 2 session is painful. i like one that last the whoel weekend.
when the cool suit works, it's nirvana.

HA! Classic mooty.
High pressure sounds like a *great* idea
in a track car
Anyways, I wouldn't go with a hard pack solution.
The bag and case being soft is a major advantage.
Furthermore, most of the cost of the system
is in the Cool shirt itself. Those are $$$.
I got the bag on sale from Roger for like $250.

Hmm. Maybe the "right" way to do this would be to tap into the existing AC system in the car and add a second heat exchanger for cooling the water lines (right next to the exchanger that cools the air in the car). Hard to replicate that amount of cooling power in separate carried systems...

Get a pro ac cooler. They're only like 20k.
I have the same setup as laranja but with the cheaper cotton shirt and the biiiig soft bag. Holds a crapload of ice. Maybe last to lunch then swap it out. Same pump as in hard case models. Mine fits behind seat on rs haven't gotten that far on gt4!!

Joe-what would you change re suspension if you had a do over?
Have to say this is the greatest thread I have ever read. Joe and the other contributors are making it easy for people like me. Coming out of a highly modified 911 I decided a GT4 was the way to go. Got lucky and got a stripper much like yours. I wanted a motor, gear shift and lwb seats and nothing else they didn't make me buy. Found the thread when looking for advice on roll bars and then read the entire thing. BTW went with the Competition Motorsports bar but there are certainly good options. See photo. Left the suspension stock with just a track alignment to see if what I heard from others about instability was true. It was crazy under heavy braking with a rough track surface. Almost an oscillation component that was self replicating when you really pushed the car. Little surprised Porsche put it out this way. So my question is would you stay with the same setup you have clearly laid out in the thread and would you add the DSC module you have tested. I'm writing on a clean slate here. Thx

Several people have had success with a Guards LSD
to minimize the oscillation under braking.

So I got new RE71 and didn't get a chance to put in the springs before hand
Here is what my tires looks like.
Drivers side
Passenger
This is after 250 track miles
I changed out the OEM pads too, after 4 track days
Just another data point.
I will put up pics of the tires after my next track day. I just had the new swift springs installed

Can't remember which tires, Bridgestone maybe Khumo, that I used in the mid 90s would get that same grooved effect in the middle. Everyone called it rhe groove of doom. Appropriate because the tire didn't last too long after that.

That hard brake jiggle seems to be more emphasized in a 911. If you've never experienced braking from a 5th to 2nd corner with a crap diff in a 911 I highly recommend it :-)
Joe how is lockup on apex exit with stock diff tc etc off?
