Porsche literature collectors thread
Hi all,
Being a new member, I have tried to find a thread on Porsche literature here, but there doesnīt seem to be any yet. So, maybe itīs time to start one :) Iīd love to hear from other members that - like me - collect Porsche brochures, magazines and books. We could use this thread to show rare pieces of our collections, give & get advice on which literature is available where, comment on newly issued books, stuff like that. But first letīs see if other members are interested too, or if Iīll stay all alone here :( Best regards from Munich, Germany Lars Theunissen |
I don't have much, but I have a few owners manuals in my collection. 89 964 C4, 78 930 Turbo Carrera, 83 944 among them.
My favorite piece in my collection is the 1963 print Carrera Twin-Cam assembly manual. It is the most perfect edition I have ever seen, and I got a deal on it. |
I've got a bunch of 356 stuff (for my 356) including service booklet, original manual, and most of the Panos from Jan '60 thru Dec '69 ...
Wouldn't mind selling off the Panos... |
I bought a few 996 2004 40th Anniversary Edition items on eBay - brochure, poster. I also have some stuff that Porsche sent as promo items like a USB memory stick.

Hereīs a recent rare addition to my collection: the brochure of the limited-to-13-cars 911 Club Coupe:

Here are some other books from my collection: They are issued by the Porsche Museum and at just 15 Euros a piece, very nicely done. All are in German/English and the collection is still growing. I have about eight pieces of this series now, soon two more are to be issued by the Museum: "Porsche in America" and "60 Years of Porsche Clubs Worldwide".
Several of these books can also be bought through German Ebay and I think through Amazon too. However, the latest edition "Porsche Exclusive" seems only to be for sale directly in the Museum. |

If you are interested in motor sport I highly recommend Norbert Singer's 24:16 and Hans Mezger's book. Paul Frere is great too. |

I must agree with you. I regret having not kept all of my collection of Excellence magazines when I moved. I did however keep some vintage stuff including a USA today proof of Porsche's last Le Mans win. Have you looked at any of Ulrich Upietz's books? Very high quality. The GT1 books are excellent!

Hereīs another book from my collection - a very interesting one about 50 years of Kremer Racing. This is the limited edition (250 pcs), but thereīs also a less costly regular edition available. I think itīs only in German language though.

Thanks, I donīt think I have any of the four you recommend yet, but Iīll surely get them at one point. 145 Porsche books in my collection now, so there are still really many out there that Iīd like to buy!
The pics you show are from Porscheīs own literature collection in the museum Stuttgart, right? Ciao, Lars No problem! You have some excellent books. That Kremer book is very interesting. My book collection pales in comparison to yours. I ended up catching the 1/43rd bug years ago so I pretty much stick with little scale cars. Have you caught the art/print bug too? Be careful! I take it you have seen this room? Not a bad collection they have. The archives themselves are nirvana. Sounds like you already have a friend at the museum. Having friends in the right places makes a world of difference. Enjoy your collection my friend. |

Having friends in the right places makes a world of difference. Enjoy your collection my friend. Luckily Iīve been able to resist art prints so far, as I donīt have the space for them anyway. I do however collect Porsche postcards, of which loads are available in the Museum shop. And since last year the "Porsche Grill Badge"-bug has bitten me too, so now I also collect these - I think I have seven so far. Apart from Porsche, I love Ferraris too, plus many other exotic cars and historic racing in general. So my Porsche books are actually only a part of a much bigger automotive book collection, I have about 900 in total - a bit crazy, but they make me happy (and my wife a bit less happy, but ok...) :-) Oh yes, and I collect all the sales literature too - of Porsche and the other makes that I like. Plus 1000s of car magazines, mainly those dedicated to Porsche & Ferrari, as well as classic magazines like Octane and Classic & Sportscar. And club magazines too, of course... Space is currently my main problem :-) I did start a 1/43 model Ferrari collection some time ago and have about 50 handbuilts of these (mainly BBR), plus maybe 30 Porsche 1/43 diecasts by Minichamps etc. They are really very nice, but Iīm not certain at this moment if Iīd like to continue, as my main passion is the literature. So Iīve stopped buying model cars since this year in favour of buying more literature - there are still so many books out there, waiting to be purchased :-))) Ciao, Lars |
How was the Carrera RS meeting? I bet you saw some beautiful cars. I love the simplicity of the older cars. I wish I could frequent the Porsche Museum as often as you do. The gift shop is definitely dangerous. Have you ever visited the Mercedes Museum? It is of a scale that emphasizes their heritage in great detail.
What's this about your liking Italian trash? I'm only kidding! There are so many automobiles to lust over. If you are ever in Eastern France make it a point to visit the automobile museum in Mulhouse. It's amazing. I too have a special place in my heart for older racing cars. I was in France this year during the Le Mans Classic but was unable to attend. I would have loved to have witnessed such a vast collection of cars on track. I hope you and your wife are still on speaking terms after your most recent visit to the gift shop. I have tested the wife's patience more times than I can remember. Here's to having understanding wives! We never really grow-up. |

Here's to having understanding wives! We never really grow-up. I purchased three more books, an old userīs manual of the 356 B (unsure if itīs a reprint or not) and 40 postcards. So, for me it was a successful visit again! The Carrera RS meeting was very, very nice! All these old RSīs (plus a few modern 964 and 993 ones, as well as three 911 Sport Classics) were a great sight in all their colour variations. They were all nicely lined up in rows in the centre square of Ludwigsburg Palace. All cars were from Europe though, unfortunately none from further away, like the USA. Maybe at the 50th Anniversary then :) Iīve not yet visited the Mercedes Museum, although I will on one of my next visits to Stuttgart. To me liking Italian trash, my Ferrari friends similarly usually make fun of me liking these "boring Porsches". Never mind, I like them all! What a pity you couldnīt visit Le Mans Classic! I was there for the first time this year and it was absolutely fantastic. One of the best events Iīve ever visited in the 20 years or so Iīve been doing that. The only problems were the terrible weather (lots of heavy rain) and too many good offers on car books (I brought home 20 pieces!). Maybe in two years, you can come to LM Classic too - itīs definitely worth it! While you missed LM Classic, I deeply regret to have missed all editions of Rennsport Reunion in the USA. Itīs now a must-do event in my agenda! Ciao, Lars PS: next weekend Oktoberfest starts - itīs just 2,5 miles from where I live here in Munich, so maybe less Porsche and more beer for me during the coming two weeks :D |

Hereīs the 356 B userīs manual I purchased at the Museum yesterday. I asked the staff if it was original or a reprint and they were uncertain. In the end they said it was a reprint, which it indeed might be, judging from how perfect the condition is. However, inside the manual there is no notice of it being a reprint anywhere, something Iīd normally expect Porsche to do. It just has the number 4601.10 and "Issue January 1963" on the first page, along with some other text. Is there maybe a 356 literature expert around who could let me know if this is an original 1963 manual or a later reprint? What should I check to be certain? Many thanks in advance!
Ciao, Lars PS: The colours look brighter than real on my pic because of the camera flash. |

The RS meeting sounds very nice. I would have to say that my favorite is the 993 version. The Club-sport option is like pornography to me. The Mercedes Museum is impressive. Towards the exit they have a streamliner that was designed by Ferdinand Porsche. I hope you know my Ferrari comment was merely a joke? I envy your attendance at the Le Mans Classic. The sights and sounds must have made for some serious sensory overload. I will have to live vicariously through you when it comes to Oktoberfest. I'm hoping the case of Samuel Adams Oktoberfest I have in the refrigerator will help in my desperate hours. Enjoy! |

And sure I knew the Ferrari comment was a joke - no offence taken at all :D Fun to see that the Americans also make an Octoberfest-edition beer. The real thing however would be one of these six Munich breweries, the only ones allowed to sell at the Oktoberfest: - Paulaner - Hacker-Pschorr - Spaten - Augustiner - Löwenbräu - Hofbräu Maybe one or more of these are also available in NYC? If so, fill up a 1-liter glass (the only size available for beer at the Oktoberfest), wear a Lederhosen (leather pants) and itīll almost be like being here :) Ciao, Lars |

By the way, here are the other three books I purchased last Sunday - all three are only available in German language as far as I know.

You have a library on your hands. What's the price of admission? Can I check anything out? ;)
Nice additions by the way. The 928 never gets enough love. I always considered it a sort of German hot rod. |

Apart from books, I also collect Porsche postcards. The Museum currently has this very nice set available, amongst many, many others:

Wow! I did not see those when I was there in July. I would have definitely bought them.
You have good taste Lars. |

Pity indeed! I wish the gift shop had a web site for ordering. One would think that with Porsche being so very good at marketing that they would seize an opportunity like this. It's not like everyone can go to Germany all the time in order to buy some of the wonderful items that the gift shop has.
Sorry for the rant and enjoy the upcoming festivities. |

To get back to Porsche books, hereīs another one that I like a lot. This book by Jerry Pantis is packed with great pictures of the 904, 906 & 910 in racing and seems to be quite rare. I found it through an online bookseller in France last year and can fully recommend it:
|
I have only seen it online but was immediately interested. Thanks for the recommendation. I will have to add it to the collection.

A nice print-on-demand picture book on the Rennsport Reunion IV can be found here:
http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2779328 Very nice photography and itīs great to finally have a book on this great event, especially as all the magazine articles were way too short and I wanted to see much more! Only small criticism is that the pictures are sometimes printed in a slightly less than perfect quality, but otherwise the book is very nice to have and well recommended to anyone who couldnīt visit Rennsport Reunion and take lots of pictures himself (like me). Ciao, Lars |

My favorite so far in the collection of small but great books issued by the Porsche Museum: "Porsche Exclusive". Full of interesting stories and lots of pics of the cars made by the "special wishes" department. A must-have and cheap too, at just 15 Euros!

I'm the sales & marketing manager for Bentley Publishers. I've mostly been posting about our new 996 manual but it's also worth noting that we've just published the new Karl Ludvigsen book on the early years of the 356.
http://www.bentleypublishers.com/ima...k-image-cc.jpg If anyone has any questions about Porsche - Origin of the Species, feel free to post them here and I can try and answer them! |
Does it cover the Gmund cars and the difficulty in sourcing parts/materials? I have always found it interesting how much the cars changed from one to the other dependent on what they could get.
I'm sure it's an excellent book. |

Brochure Printing Date Codes
Can anyone help me decode the numbers/letters Porsche prints on the back of their modern brochures? What exactly do they mean? I'm interested to know if it tells me when exactly the brochure was printed and for what model years it applies. For example, I have 3 brochures with the following printed on the back:
MKT 001 049 06 (It says "Printed in USA" and 2005 Porsche Cars North America). Is this for the 2006 or 2005 model year? MKT 006 063 06 (It says "Printed in USA" and 2006 Porsche Cars North America). Is this for the 2006 or 2007 model year? MKT 001 098 07 (It says "Printed in USA" and 2006 Porsche Cars North America). Is this for the 2006 or 2007 model year? Thank you for your help. Sean |

books or reference manilas for 3.2 carrera
i am restoring a low mileage 88 3.2 Carrera sport coupe. in your opinion what are the best reference books or reference sources for the late model 3.2?
|
I was sent these books by my uncle. He and my dad had p[orsches way back when.
They are 4 bound books the size of magazines titled Christophorus Series 50 Christophorus Series 60 Christophorus Series 70 Christophorus Series 80 They cover the years 1964 - 1970. I flipped through the last one and at the end is a 1970 yearbook. They look neat, but I haven't had time to read through them yet. Lots of beautiful pictures and magazine reviews also. Any idea what I have here? https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...2ea284328b.jpg |

WHat I meant was more along the lines of,.... Are they rare? What were they exactly? A special order set for people subscribed to the magazine? Complete sets for dealers? The way they came when you ordered complete previous years? I cannot find anything about them online,.. and have no idea why these are bound, how rare they are, value? My neighbor has a 356 (amongst other Porsches). Perhaps he'll enjoy borrowing them. |

Does Karl Ludvigsen plan on updating/revising Porsche: Excellence Was Expected any time soon? With so many new vehicles and updates to Porsche vehicles I am hoping for an update, and I suspect many other readers would like to see an updated/revised edition. If Maurice in not listening, has anyone heard if Karl Ludvigsen is planning an update/revision? I would be one of the first in line to purchase the newly updated/revised volumes!!! :burnout: |
Myporschecollection.com
Hi, I have collected Porsche memorabilia for over 30 years. I was fortunate enough to put most of it on display in South Miami at Das Renn Treffen put on by Alvaro of Park Haus 1. I have a web site: myporschecollection.com where almost everything can be seen. Take a look and let me know what you think. The spread sheet is searchable. The entire collection is now for sale. I need to pay for the 2018 Carrera GTS cabriolet that I just ordered. Enjoy yourself. Bruce
